Obituary

Nancy Nordby, age 66, of Ferndale, WA, passed away on Monday, December 30th after battling a long illness. She was born in Bellingham, WA on February 15th, 1953, daughter of Dennis  and Ruby Flaherty. She is survived by her son Brent (Ella) Nordby, daughter Brenda Huntley, granddaughter Mackenzie Nordby, mother Ruby Flaherty, brother Jeff (Cathi) Flaherty, brother Pat Flaherty, in addition to many nieces and extended family members. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Nordby, father Dennis Flaherty, father and mother-in-law  Raymond (Red) and Lois Nordby and sister-in-law Karen Flaherty.

Nancy graduated from Ferndale High School in 1971 and married Gordon Nordby a few months later. They were blessed with two children, a son Brent and daughter Brenda. The family enjoyed many summers and spontaneous weekends filled with camping trips to Silver Lake. Fishing trips to Loon Lake with her parents were a family favorite. After the kids began school, Nancy started her career as a Denture Technician with Bellingham Denture Clinic for many years; working closely with and gaining lifelong friendships with owners Clay and Theresa Sulek and their daughters.

Nancy spent many years, including those after retirement, volunteering for local organizations including Liv Life and the Ferndale Other Bank. Nancy’s willingness to give of her time to help support those in need seemed limitless. She had the purest of hearts and that was evident to anyone who met her.

Her favorite hobbies included spending time with her loved ones, volunteering, gardening and doting on animals, especially her beloved basset hounds. She would spend hours upon hours in the kitchen baking. You were lucky to receive some of her famous pecan tarts or other Christmas treats, baked with love by Nancy, daughter Brenda and granddaughter Mackenzie. Among the many things she looked forward to most; an annual fishing trip to the Rogue River with her brothers and sisters, fall trips to the Oregon Coast with daughter Brenda and long weekends spent visiting her son Brent. She beamed with pride over the accomplishments of her family.

Nancy could always be counted on for her ability to listen, her eagerness to encourage and her willingness to open her home and her heart to everyone. She will be remembered most for her compassion and nurturing soul.

A memorial service will be held at Greenacres Memorial Park at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 4th.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Other Bank and Whatcom Humane Society.

  1. Dear Brent, Brenda, Ruby, Pat, Jeff, and all those who loved Nancy,
It’s been many years since I’ve been in Nancy’s life, but we were sister-in-laws for 16 years. We were young parents, raised our kids together, spent most weekends and holidays together, laughed and cried and grew up together. Actually, I’ve known Nancy since Alexander Jr High School, and I feel like Ferndale has lost an Eagle, strong and true-blue.
When Allan and I divorced, we lost contact. I eventually moved to Olympia, and was remarried in 2007. Nancy and I reconnected via Facebook Messenger when Red Nordby was sick and she was taking care of him. We vowed to get together and catch up for many years of lost time, and we never did that.
My heart is breaking for you all, as I know she was a rock and pivotal to family and friends. I truly cannot believe she’s gone. I’m so sorry.
Sending you all love and tears in remembrance of a great lady.
    Carol
