Obituary

Mildred E. Richey, age 100, passed away peacefully at Whatcom  Hospice House on January 12, 2020. Mildred was born in Candle, Alaska as Ellen Mildred Victoria Herbert. She met Norman Richey who was working on the gold dredges in her town of Candle, Alaska and later married him in Seattle on August 18, 1941. They moved to Blaine after Norman returned from World War II and owned and operated the Archway Motel for 12 years. They later moved to Ferndale, WA where they lived and raised 2 boys. Mildred loved sewing especially making and selling dolls and stuffed animals. She loved baking Swedish Pancakes, cinnamon rolls and waffles and loved going on Sunday drives all around Whatcom County as a family. She raised small farm animals, raised rabbits, ducks, pheasants, chickens, and sold eggs. She also loved activities at home such as cards, board games, and badminton. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Norman Richey, brother Uno Herbert, and sister Doris Wright. Mildred is survived by her 2 sons Mark (wife Debbie) Richey and Glenn (wife Dana) Richey, 4 grandsons Seth (Mary), Brent (Megan), Kyle (Courtney), Brian (Melissa) Richey. She also had numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later time in early spring.
