Obituary

Merlin N. Solvang, age 84, passed away at home on December 24, 2017 in Ferndale, WA. Merlin was born in Bellingham, WA on June 10, 1933 to parents Borghild Haug and Torkil Bertheus Solvang. He attended Bellingham High School and later married the love of his life, Phyllis Wynne, on October 22, 1955. Merlin served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany. After the service he worked in banking until joining the Whatcom County Sheriff Department where he served as Chief Civil Deputy until his retirement.

Merlin was a caring husband, a loving father, and all around a good man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved to go golfing and boating when he had the time. His parents were Norwegian immigrants, and from them he inherited a love for their country, travelling to Norway whenever possible.

Merlin is predeceased by his parents and his brother Bruce. He is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis Solvang and his daughter Pam Solvang. Merlin will always be remembered for his honesty, his goodwill, and his fun-loving personality. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he will be dearly missed.

  3. Nickee Oaks says:

I worked with Merlin for most of his career art the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He always spoke fondly of his wife and even though I had never met his daughter Pam I knew all about her career and how proud her parents were of her accomplishments. Whenever I saw Merlin over the years he always was the same, happy and full of life. Hoping your fond memories of this gentle soul will sustain you through this time,
    Nickee Oaks

  4. Pat and Paul says:

Merlin was always so cheerful and full of fun. He found humor in everything. He was also very thoughtful. He and Phyllis were so helpful to us in dealing with Loretta’s things. We felt privileged to be counted as friends. Sorry we cannot attend his service, but Paul is still in the hospital and will be there for several days yet. The whole experience has bewildered him, and he is not thinking clearly. I spend most of the day there with him.
Phyllis, please know that we will be thinking of him.
    Take care,
    Pat (and Paul)

  5. Phyllis and Pam, I am so sorry to read of Merlin’s passing. I just ran in to him a few months ago in Bellingham and had a nice visit. He was a special man and my thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
