Obituary

Maxine Dolores Hilton, age 89, passed away in Bellingham on May 30, 2020. Maxine was born on April 15, 1931 in Watsonville, CA to Bud and Winifred Compton. As a young girl her family moved north and settled on the Mt. Baker Hwy. Maxine attended Mt. Baker Schools.

After graduating she went to work as a telephone operator. There she met and fell in love with a Residential Installer, Charles Cameron Hilton. She loved to watch Chuck play baseball. They were married in 1958 and together raised 4 children. Maxine was quickly appointed to CEO of 3204 Lakeway Dr. where she managed her family efficiently with loving kindness, and firm guidance. How she loved her family! Whether it was dinners at the house, picnics, camping at Saxon or Birch Bay, or working in the garden Maxine’s beautiful smile and gracious sense of humor made everything better. A woman for all seasons Maxine decorated and sewed, loved and schooled all the kids, filled the house with the smell of baked goods, and enjoyed canning with Granny and her aunts. She was always up for a BBQ, a ride in the car, Yahtzee at the kitchen table, or talking over the fence with the Nielsens next door. Maxine cherished birthdays, holidays, winter snows, and animals of any kind. As a true patriot, she instilled in her family a love for home and country.

Maxine is preceded in death by her loving husband Charles Hilton Sr., brother Jim Compton, daughter-in-law Chris Hilton, and her best friend, Betty Cook. She is survived by children Chuck (Jan) Hilton Jr., Marlene (Jack) Wright, Jeannine (Chris) Tull, and Tom Hilton, 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, and 2 nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Maxine’s name can be made to Whatcom Hospice, and Whatcom Humane Society.

  2. To the Hilton family, I am so sorry to hear of Maxine’s passing. The last time I saw her in February, she was in good spirits, laughing and sharing stories about her family. She was so proud of all of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Her engaging smile would light up a room and the smile always reached her eyes…so genuine, kind and sweet. She will be missed…may special and warm memories of your life with her help you through this sad time.

    With deepest sympathy,
    Terry Jeppesen

  3. How lucky is heaven to have Maxine join them! In my youth, she was an angel disguised as my good friend’s mom. She fed me, told me telephone operator stories, laughed at Mar’s and my stories, let me hang out at their home endlessly. She always seemed sincerely happy to have me there too. What a smile! I can still picture Maxine, Betty, and Granny sitting around the kitchen table near the back door sipping out of coffee cups giggling at new and old jokes and stories. She was a true hostess. Unconsciously teaching us manners, cooking and serving skills, a sense of humor, and barrels of kindness. My favorite food at her many buffet meals was her chili. My husband insists she made the best potato salads (one with and one without) ever tasted. In retrospect, I am so thankful to have had Maxine contribute to my upbringing and that my husband got to know her too.
Mar, Chuck, Jeanine, and Tom; please accept our sympathy to you and your families for the loss of Maxine. Love, Sandi and John Bruton

My heart is heavy for the Hilton family as I know how much you will all miss her! You have been so very blessed to have such a special person in your life!
How lucky Tim and I were to have Maxine as our neighbor for over 20 years! We shared gardening tips and plants, traded recipes and cookies. Many a time Marley (the dog) and I could be found sitting at the Hilton kitchen table sharing our lives while Marley got a treat or two from Chuck. Maxine’s sweet smile and kind personality will always be held in my heart. Tim and I both will forever miss the friendship we had with Maxine.
    Peace be with you all,
    Rhonda and Tim
