  1. Just want to let you and your family know we are sorry for your loss and that you will be in our thoughts and prayers…

  2. Mark was truly one of the “great guys”, figuratively and literally. He was both really tough and extremely kind, very serious and very funny, wicked smart and pretty simple. In high school i was just terrified of him because he was such a tough dude, but over the years of knowing him through Mike and his family i got to know him as a very nice person. My strongest memory of Mark was the faith he had in me and Mike. He stepped up and guaranteed the mortgage so Penny and I could buy our first house when my Dad wouldn’t. No contracts or collateral, just told us not to screw up and miss any payments. My favorite memory of Mark was being the only crewman in a high-stakes poker game after a herring closing in the Yardarm Knot’s storeroom, when Chafee locked the door and wouldn’t let anyone leave until someone went bust… (which i think was Al…). Mark must have noticed my concern when the door got locked (and Baumgart’s, as he thought I’d lose my whole crew share). His advice…”Everyone here is a skipper with a big ego, so let them lose their money. Just don’t play anything stupid and you’ll be fine”. Pretty smart, pretty simple and spot on.
Warmest wishes to the Pennylegion family in memory of Mark, a great guy who we are all better off for knowing.
