Obituary

Lynden

Marjorie Odell Pemberton Odell passed away peacefully at Whatcom Hospice House on September 1, 2014. Odell was born in DeLeon, Texas on October 28, 1921 to the late Samuel Bentley and Esther (Woodfin) Dupriest. She was 92.

On August 18, 1937, Odell married Weldon Paul Slaughter of Cross Plains, Texas. They had four sons who are all now deceased; Oscar Carl Slaughter (Wanda), Kenneth Paul Slaughter (Jennie), Clyde Bentley Slaughter, and Donald Ray Slaughter. She also had one daughter, Janis Marie Ingram (Dan) who lives in Bellingham, WA.

Odell moved to Bellingham in 1968 after her daughter and husband moved here. She worked as a nurse for over 40 years and retired from St. Josephs. After retirement, she continued to work as a caregiver, part time, until she was in her early 70s. Friends and acquaintances of the family that had Mom as their nurse always commented on how friendly, patient and kind she was. She worked in several different areas at St. Josephs, but the last few years before retirement she worked with the newborns and especially loved that.

Odell liked playing cards, dominoes, and bingo. She always had a flower and vegetable garden, and loved spending her time working in them as long as she was able. Her greatest joy in her last years was spending time with all the new babies arriving in the family and, of course, the rest of her family members, as well as her special, long-time friend Margaret Moles. She is survived by 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, with 3 on the way.

The family would like to thank the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, whose loving care of Odell and supportiveness and kindness to her family meant so much. They would also like to extend a big thank you to all of her home caregivers.
