Obituary

Born on February 1, 1923 to Joseph Daniel Sullivan and Margaret Craggan, Peg was raised an only-child until her mother’s passing when she was 7. She was then raised by her grandparents and was subsequently joined in the Sullivan Household by two cousins, Margaret Mary Noe and Mary Lou Kellyr. She graduated from Grafton High School and Worchester State Teachers College. She worked as a waitress on the Cape, a clerk in the Department of the Navy in Washington DC and taught at Appleton Academy in NH before going on a blind date with a GI on leave in 1944. She told him that she would marry him if and when he returned from the War. On June 27th 1946 she married B. J. Laverty on one of the hottest days of the year in Grafton. They were joined in short order by Michael (1948), Mary (1950), Daniel (1951), and Sean (1954). They moved from Olean NY to Ferndale WA in September 1954, had another child Elizabeth (1962) and spent 38 more years together before Bernie’s passing in 1992. Now she rejoins Bernie and Elizabeth who have passed on before her.

In her later years she taught English as a second language, waitressed at Merrill Gardens, and delivered newspapers among other jobs to keep active. She was also a member of St Mary’s Guild and a parishioner of St Joseph Church.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 27 at 10AM at St. Joseph Church (5781 Hendrickson Ave, Ferndale, WA 98248).

  1. We are so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful person and yesterday was a special tribute to her. I loved the priest’s stories about greeting her every week at mass. May all of your positive memories of her continue strong and give you each peace and love. She loved you very much and still does from heaven. Much love,

I remember all the fun we had in the legion all those years ago. Remembering you with love and thank you’s in my heart. God holds you in his loving arms now. God bless

  3. I leave my condolences as a total stranger since there is no way any of you would remember me. My family lived in the Panama Canal Zone in the 60s, but one summer we were staying in Ferndale with my grandparents and went to your house for the day as my grandparents knew your parents, possibly from New York? Anyway, we had a wonderful afternoon playing with the Laverty kids. I remember Sean, who was my age, and Mary, who was my brother’s age. You lived in a big house on a farm (at least that’s how I remember it), and your mom was very sweet to all 5 of us (we were quite the boisterous crowd). She gave us milk and cookies and asked us about Panama. My grandparents were Cecelia and Charlie Flynn. Anyway, I never forgot that afternoon spent at your house, and I never forgot your sweet mom. It’s funny how one person, one moment really, can stay with you your whole life.
    Hope you all are well.
