Obituary

Margaret “Peggy” Kok

Our mom, Margaret Peggy Kok, passed away on January 20, 2013 in her home at Meadow Greens in Lynden at the age of 73. She was an only child, born on April 3, 1939 to Hank and Grace DeGroot of Everett.

Peggys mom died suddenly when she was 6 years old so she spent many years living with aunts and uncles who helped raise her during her school years in Everett and Lynden. Because of this, she became extremely close to many cousins whom she lived with and felt they were more like her siblings. In high school she loved being a cheerleader and also enjoyed choir; she graduated from Lynden Christian in 1957.

In 1958, she married our dad, John Kok. Peggy spent the next 20 plus years raising us. She loved to have fun and we remember her playing rock music on the radio and dancing in the kitchen on a regular basis. She also loved to roller skate and we spent many hours at the roller skating rink with her. We also loved spending time with her at the Bellingham Country Club swimming pool during the summer, or heading out to Birch Bay, and our yearly jaunt to Yakima for a week. We also remember praying together at our front door every morning before we headed off to school, and the special school lunches she made for us each day. She was even known to show up at school events and functions in costume! Our parents were married for 25 years. She was a member of New Life Fellowship Church.

Our mom loved going for coffee with her friends and family members. She enjoyed spending time with her cousins, her brothers and sisters-in-law, and loved her mother-in-law, Grace. She still saw her friends from high school on a regular basis. She also loved traveling, shopping in thrift stores, spending time with her grandkids, and later in life, playing Canasta. A highlight in her life was traveling to Europe to visit our brother Brad in Berlin. She also loved attending plays and musicals, singing, purses, anything plaid, Mary Engelbreit artwork, vintage tablecloths, antique syrup pitchers, and Snow White.

Besides her parents and in laws, Peggy was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Heather, and her son, Brian, along with many beloved aunts and uncles. She is survived by her son, Brent (Mary), her daughter, Brenda (Larry), her son, Brad (Sonja), and her daughter, Barbie (Alex) along with her grandkids who were very special to her and who loved her very much: Kayla, Tyler, Benjamin, Kevin, Cassie, Courtney (Bobby), Emily, Nico, Hannah, & Gracie, and her two great-grandchildren.

A very special thanks to friends and family who visited her and prayed with and for her toward the end of her life. You meant so much to her! Also, many thanks to the nurses and staff at Meadow Greens and Hospice; we truly appreciate everything you did for her!

We will always love you and miss you Mom!

  2. Brent, I am so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was a sweet and speical lady and I’m sure you will miss her very much. Her obituary was beautifully written and an wonderful tribute to her. I pray that you are comforted with your memories.

  3. Peggy was a dear friend for over 40 years, and the best friend you could have. We met in 1972 when she was working at the Fairway Cafe in Lynden and I was enjoying their cinnamon rolls. I admired her haircut and a friendship began. We traveled many places together when she worked as a travel agent: San Francisco, Florida and Reno, where she met the Mahre brothers (Olympic medalists) on the slopes and so enjoyed skiing with them. She loved going out for breakfast or lunch with friends. We would often go for Cheese Blintz, her favorite, at the Calico Inn. Her outgoing personality drew people to her, and she had more friends than anyone I know. A part of our life is gone and she will be deeply missed.
