Obituary

Dr. Louis Anzalone, Jr, age 90, passed away in Bellingham, Washington on Friday January 21, 2022. He was born in Independence, Louisiana, on October 6, 1931. He graduated from Independence High School in 1951. Since he was a standout football player in high school, he received a scholarship to Southeastern Louisiana College. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture 1954. He attended Louisiana State University and received a Master of Science in Plant Pathology in 1956 and a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1959. He was appointed as an Assistant Plant Pathologist in the Department of Plant Pathology, Louisiana State University doing research in breeding and selection of new disease resistant varieties of sugarcane. He was later made project leader of the sugarcane breeding and selection program, and in 1962 was made Associate Professor of Plant Pathology. In 1966 he was appointed by the Louisiana State University and Burden Foundation to act as general supervisor of research development for Burden Research Center. In 1988 he retired after 27 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, crabbing, spending time with family, and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He met his wife, Alyne Candiotto, in elementary school and the two spent seventy years together until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Alyne Candiotto Anzalone; daughters; Mary Virginia Anzalone Weil, Elizabeth (husband Kenny) Webre, sons; Kent (wife Denise) Anzalone, Keith (wife, Joline) Anzalone. He had 7 grandchildren: Charles Hernandez, Joshua Rayburn, Jona Rayburn, Blake (wife, Brooklyn) Webre, Ashley Webre, Kristin Anzalone, and Kayla (husband, Clayton) Whitney. He had 5 great grandchildren: Chase Hernandez, Collin Rayburn, Elaina Rayburn, Caton Whitney, and Keeley Whitney.
