Obituary

Leo was born on March 31, 1939 in Bellingham, WA to Raymond and Orma (Adams) Hammer, the 13th of 13 children. “They finally got it right”. After attending Bellingham High School, he moved to California where he started his own painting company. The family lived on a ranch where they enjoyed their horses, cows, and many other types of animals. He returned to Whatcom County in 1970’s where he continued his painting company. In 1982, Leo met his now wife, Tammy Walter, and they moved to Alaska. He spent time as a painting contractor in Anchorage and then moved to Juneau where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a commercial fisherman. In the fall of 1987, the couple moved back home to Washington. Leo was an outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Leo is predeceased by his parents; siblings, Darryl Hammer, Ada (Joe) Fiamingo, Ray Hammer, Bill (Evelyn) Hammer, Roberta (Fred) Gorum, and Orma (Clary) Latham.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Hammer; daughters, Faye Ann and Marola (Dan) Quimby; siblings, Howard (Dee) Hammer, Dick (Margie) Hammer, Nita May, Ted (Judy) Hammer, Noni (John) Ahlberg, Jerry (Lurline) Hammer; grandson; Brandon (Pam) Minga; great-grandson, Landon Quimby; his very special nephew, Josh Gilliam; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 26th, 2018 at 12PM at Moles Bellingham (2465 Lakeway Dr. Bellingham) followed by a graveside service at 2PM at Greenacres Memorial Park (5700 NW Dr. Ferndale).

    We were so sorry to hear of Leo’s passing. It’s been some time since we have seen you, but have many fond memories of our times together. Our condolences to you and all the family.

  2. Life will not be the same without Uncle Leo in it! I’m thankful for the 47 years I’ve known him, but it wasn’t long enough. I’m so sorry, Aunt Tammy.

Uncle Leo was more of a big brother than an uncle……….from letting me drive a car for the first time at age 12, visiting me at boot camp in the army, and just being that bigger than life character that I always enjoyed being with. He will truly be missed because there just is no one else quite like him.

    My memories of uncle Leo are mostly from our large family get togethers. He was always fun to be around and would tell jokes. As a child I always thought he was so funny. As an adult I came to respect him as one who didn’t mince words. What you saw was what you got and I appreciated that. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
