Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) Joseph Roderick Jr, age 82, passed away peacefully at home after a brave battle with cancer. He was born to Lawrence and Vera (Moreira) Roderick in Oakland, CA on October 18, 1942.

Larry graduated from the first graduating class of Castro Valley High School in 1960. He played basketball at Napa Valley Junior College for two years and worked as a truck driver at Hunts Foods until he was drafted into the Army in 1964 where he proudly served for two years. In 1967, he married Carolyn Hoggarth in Hayward, CA and later moved to Bellingham with his family in 1971. He worked at Mount Baker Plywood and Bellingham Cold Storage before finishing his career as a truck driver for Puget Sound Trucklines.

Larry was a funny, loving, friendly, outgoing, talkative guy who was very proud of his family. He loved attending sports events for the kids and grandkids throughout the years, and he rarely missed an event!

Larry’s passion and love for golf were unmatched! You never played a round with him where he wasn’t fishing abandoned golf balls out of the water. He was an avid bowler and played men’s slow pitch for many years. He was also a member and Past President of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles (FOE) and loved to play the Lottery.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Atchison, brother-in-law Tommy Silva, and granddaughter Angela Roderick.  He is survived by his long-time companion Charlene Bartlett (and her family); cousin Lorraine Nunes, who shared his birthday; sister Sharon Silva; son Tony Roderick (Char), daughters Lori Larkin (Daryl), Cathy Woods (Troy), Carrie Roderick (Shane); grandchildren Ashley, Carly, Hannah, Brett, Gabrielle, Chase, Peyton, Liam, Elise; niece Amy Silva-McCann (Erin) and daughter Piper; along with many cousins and other relatives. Larry will also be greatly missed by long-time friends Gary Sapeta, Kelly Hudson, Mike Holcomb, Bill Crawford, and so many more.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Larry. Larry and I were Forwards on the Castro Valley Basket Ball team during the ‘59-60’ season. Great times!
Though miles apart and Through the years he always kept in touch with positive words. A good man and true friend. You are missed.

So sad to hear of Larry’s passing. we had stayed in touch through the years. We played basketball together at castro valley high school. His emails and occasional phone conversations will be greatly missed. Hope you can “dunk” a couple in Heaven.
