Obituary

Lawrence A. Hildes passed away on November 20, 2021, surrounded by his loving family in Bellingham, WA at the age of 56. Larry was born in the Bronx, New York on July 10, 1965, to Barry and Susan (Studen) Hildes. The family moved to Port Jefferson, New York in 1976 where Larry graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in 1983. Larry attended Northwestern University and graduated from Evergreen State College in 1987. He obtained his Juris Doctor from New College of California in 1995.

On May 21, 2000, Larry married the love of his life, Karen Weill, in Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Lagunitas, California. They relocated from the Bay Area to Bellingham soon after. Larry was a social justice attorney who was committed to helping those among us who are least able to defend themselves in court. Though he often faced significant obstacles due to the nature of the cases he took on, he maintained a hopeful and optimistic outlook on life.  He was a passionate song writer and singer, an avid traveler, and an ardent sports fan.

He was preceded in death by Karen just shy of their 20th wedding anniversary.  He is survived by his parents, Barry and Susan Hildes, his sisters, Audrey (David) Schechter and Elizabeth (Sean) De Winter, and his nieces, Emma and Grace Schechter, and nephew, Peyton De Winter.

Larry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him but will remain in our hearts forever.  A graveside funeral will be held at Beth Israel Cemetery on Tuesday, November 23 at 11:30 am.
