Obituary

Beloved mother of Celia, Iker, and Otto, and stepmother to Skyler, Gabriel and Hayden, Laura passed peacefully at home with her family by her side after a nearly two year battle with cancer.

Raised in Chicago and Northern California, she graduated with a degree in Religious Studies from the University of Washington before attending law school at Tulane University. She returned to the northwest after law school to work as a public defender in Seattle and then in Bellingham, where she moved in 2002. Later she moved to private practice focused on family law and was a founding member of Whatcom Collaborative Professionals.

Laura’s passion was her children. She found joy in sharing the outdoors, books, and trips to the ocean with her family. Her warmth, intellect, love, and sense of humor were contagious. She is survived by her children, her parents Margaret and James Smith, her brother Alx Dark and his wife Lisa McArthur, niece Fiona and nephew Corwin.

A memorial celebration for Laura will take place on Sunday January 26, 2020, 12 noon, Broadway Hall, Bellingham, WA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the Law Advocates of Whatcom County, Street Law Clinic (https://lawadvocates.org/donate/).

  1. I loved Laura’s zesty fire and passion for life. She was in incredible woman who would light up a room with her wit and smile. There are very few people that have that energy. She lived with her heart open and was able to say what was on her mind without fear. Her love and passion will carry on with all of those who where close to her. I am so sorry I didn’t have more time with her….as I know everyone reading this will feel the same. Rest in Peace my wonderful woman warrior, you were an inspiration to so many. I miss you but am grateful for the time I did have with you….sending love to her family and all who are suffering from her loss.
