Joyce P. Bowhay passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6th, in Bellingham. She was born on July 1st, 1929 to Louis and Rhea Cowan in Bellingham. She was raised on Lummi Island and attended school in Ferndale, WA.

In 1948, Joyce married Gerald Bowhay in Bellingham. They worked hard together running their dairy farm in Deming, where they raised their four children. Joyce also cared for other children in the Deming area and gave them her grandmotherly love.

She enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing cards. Joyce took great pride and worked hard in her large vegetable garden every year.

Joyce is survived by her sister, Alice Bowhay of Dayton, WA; her children, Linda (Ray) TerWisscha of Sumas, Shirley (Robert) Gebhardt of Blaine, Jerry (Jill) Bowhay of Ferndale; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Bowhay, and her son, John Bowhay.

Joyce will be greatly missed by all. A celebration of her life will be held at a later time.

  2. Ron Cowan says:

I have great memories of visiting the farm in Deming as a young boy. Exploring the woods and trips down to the river followed by one of Auntie Joyce’s great meals. Lots of laughs and smiles. So thankful for those times Auntie Joyce. May you rest in peace.
