Obituary
John I. Pitner, age 70, passed away in Bellingham, WA on February 4, 2022. He was born on April 19, 1951, to Richard and Dorothy Pitner in Seattle, WA.
John worked as a Master Painter. He could paint anything, and especially enjoyed painting ships in maritime settings. John also worked as a Horticulturalist and loved to garden.
John was fiercely loyal to the ones he loved. This, combined with his good hearted silliness and exuberant approach to life made him a wonderful father to his daughter Rachel, whom he cherished. Some of Rachel’s fondest memories are of fishing with her dad. The 4th of July was a highpoint of the year in the Pitner home. John also enjoyed relaxing on a Sunday drive and listening to good music. Both stubborn and intellectual, John taught Rachel to stand her ground and to have an inquisitive mind.
John is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Joe Pitner, Richard Pitner, Susan Doran and Shelia Burlison, stepbrothers Rick and Scott Sprague, and good friends George Detolo, and Harold aka Rabbit.
He is survived by his daughter Rachel L. Smith, siblings Denise Ankrem and Larry Sprague, nieces & nephews Mandy Pitner, Terri Pitner, Traci Pitner, Jesse Burlison, John Burlison, Cathy Doran, and Jimmy Doran.
There will be an open house visitation at Moles Farewell Tributes – Bayview Chapel at 2465 Lakeway Drive in Bellingham on Wednesday, February 16 from 10am to 4pm.

Dear John,
You are in our heart and thoughts always.
So many fun memories and adventures from you and Bill deciding to take flight lessons to hiking together to the mines and caverns. As you always said “the mountain provides”. Wishing you a great new adventure on your journey.
Love you – Deb & brother Bill Reece

If it wasn’t for this man, I never would’ve gotten the guts to leave my daughter’s dad, or get my job at Walmart to approve my transfer. He helped me escape a reality I tried denying happening. I’ll forever be grateful for him n his words n help n kindness. He also taught me how to play “London Bridge is Falling Down” and “Mary had a little lamb” on the piano. The 4th of July was the best holiday with him. Our summers of endless camping in Mazama and Winthrop. I have so many memories that’ll cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you for a great childhood.

Sorry to have read this. I’ve known John for many many years. My family (husband, Daniel Wayne Palmer passed away in Oct. 2005) and our son, used to go camping with the family. Spent 4th of July with them. Remember a time where a bottle rocket went up in Daniel’s jacket & went off, lol, he wasn’t hurt or anything. Good times! Be thinking about Rachel.
