Obituary
John Boyer, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Uncle and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on January 3, 2025. Born on March 13, 1947, in Quincy, Illinois, John was the eleventh of twelve children born to James and Erma Boyer. He spent his early childhood in Illinois before his family made their way to Washington state, eventually settling in Whatcom County.
A proud Vietnam veteran, John served his country with honor in the United States Navy for four years. He married his sweetheart, Linda Minaker on June 8, 1968. They settled in Ferndale, Washington where they raised their two daughters. John worked tirelessly for 38 years at the local aluminum smelter where he rarely missed a day. His strong work ethic was a quality for which he was greatly admired and something he passed down to his children.
John’s early experiences with food insecurity shaped his life’s mission to give back. For over a decade, he dedicated himself to the Ferndale Food Bank, helping to ensure that no one in his community would go hungry. He was a man who believed in helping others and gave generously of his time and energy. He opened his heart, his wallet and even his home to those in need.
When he wasn’t volunteering or working, John could often be found fishing, enjoying a lively game of cards, or spending cherished time with his family. He had a penchant for humor, a twinkle in his deep blue eyes, and an occasional love for a visit to the local casino, where his laughter was as abundant as his good fortune in life.
His wife, close friends and family called him “Johnny.” His nieces, nephews and friends of his daughters called him “Top Dog” because he referred to them as “Hot Dogs.” However he’s remembered, it will be with fondness.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Linda; his daughters, Lorinda, and Jennifer; four grandchildren, Caleb, Abigail, Dawson and Joseph who were his pride and joy; and countless friends and extended family members who were touched by his kindness.
In honoring John’s memory, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ferndale Food Bank, continuing his mission of ensuring no one goes without.
John Boyer worked hard and he loved even harder—a legacy never to be forgotten.

I have the honor of calling you my grandfather. I will hold on to the countless memories of us and the stories you told. Grandpa touched the lives of so many people. The kindness and love he spread is unremarkable. You will be missed but I love you forever grandpa.
