Obituary

Joan Mercedes Geleynse, Aged 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 25th, 2022 in the comfort of her home and surrounded by loved ones.

Joan was born on June 6th, 1930 in Bellingham, Washington to Clyde and Gertrude Eaton. The family made their home in Ferndale, where her mother was a homemaker to the couple’s five children. Joan’s father, Clyde, was the first fire chief of the city of Ferndale. He was a true visionary whose many innovations in fire fighting are still in use today. Tragically, Clyde lost his life in the line of duty.

Joan graduated from Ferndale high school. One of her favorite pastimes was roller skating. She met her future husband, Bruce Geleynse, at the local rink. Bruce often talked about when he first saw her skate past, “I knew she was my wife.”

The couple went on to enjoy 57 years of marriage. They had four children. Jeff, Jill, Jan, and Bruce Jr. The family enjoyed summers in the San Juan Islands, working in the family business and attending Calvary Temple together. They also lived and renovated many homes over the years.

Joan was a devoted mother, homemaker, and business partner. Joan was still helping with the family business, Bruce’s Janitor Service, until the time of her death.

Joan loved all things domestic. An  accomplished seamstress, she made many beautiful things including numerous  wedding and prom dresses. A wonderful baker, and an amazing hostess. Joan often entertained her friends for lunch at  her home which always smelled of her wonderful recipes.

Joan had six grandchildren, whom she always made time for. The cousins spent numerous holidays together and enjoyed annual trips to Birch Bay and the water slides.

Joan was preceded in death by husband, Bruce. And her beloved daughter, Jill. She is survived by by son, Jeff. Her daughter Jan. (Ray )Caldwell and son Bruce. Grandchildren; Brad, Lori Geleynse, and Michelle (Jason) Dortch Tina (John) Veitch Ryan(Summer) Munday, and Amy (Rick) Palmby and eight great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 8th at 2:00pm in Greenacres Memorial Park, Ferndale.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
