Obituary

Inez Oline Askland Sorenson Berg went home to be with Jesus on January 11, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on November 16, 1919 to Hans and Mabel (Thompson) Askland at their home on the Oat Coles Road near Everson, Washington. Inez married her high school sweetheart and neighbor, Helmer Sorenson, on April 8, 1939 at her parents’ home and lived in a new home Helmer built in Everson just a few steps from his work as a mechanic for Mades Motor Company. The war effort soon took them to Bremerton where their first daughter Kathleen was born. After the war, they moved to Bellingham where she has resided since.
She was well known as the oldest surviving Charter member of Immanuel Bible Church (which Helmer helped to build), the house mother to over 600 college girls at Western Manor for 56 years (as told in her book “The Adventures of a College Housemother”) and a longtime volunteer at St. Joseph’s hospital.
Helmer died July 2, 1987 and three years later Inez married James Berg whose family homesteaded the land on which she was born. She had known him since he was 13 years old. They enjoyed traveling, including many road trips in her motor home and 23 cruises. Jim survives to manage Western Manor.
She leaves behind four daughters, Kathleen Hayes, Barbara Johnson Johns (Foster), Noreen Adcock (Steven) and Lori Adderley (Ben), ten granddaughters and two grandsons. She also has ten great-grandchildren (one set of twin girls) and five great-great-grandchildren (two sets of twins). Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. The Sorenson nieces and nephews were especially thoughtful with their many loving visits.
Her older sister, Evelyn, and younger sister, Ora Mae, both preceded her in death as well as her grandson, Kelly Hayes, and son-in-law Dennis Johnson.
Her memorial service will be held at Immanuel Bible Church at 1 PM on January 21st, 2017 with reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

  1. Mom I miss you so much. Life has not been the same with out you. I know you are with my dad, your dad and Dennis. Just know how much I love you. Your daughter Booboo

  2. I loved my grandmother very much. Such a great love comes as a blessing. Within a heart, now rekindled by ashes and dust, God is closer now. The message sounds like thunder. Like that of the roots of the Wyrd tree, you will find Us grounded in the soil; waiting for the world to exhale. Grandma walks with the exhalted; I find a sense of peace with thoughts like this.
