Obituary

Grace Garrett, age 99, passed away in Bellingham on January 26, 2018 surrounded by family. She was born in Detroit, MI on December 20, 1918. After graduating from high school in Detroit, she eventually worked as an executive assistant to the CEO of Chrysler, volunteered at the local hospital, then settled into life as an excellent homemaker.

Grace was regal, graceful, witty, intelligent, fun-loving, bright, loyal, cultured, wise, and child-like at times. She had an unforgettable smile and unqualified love for her family. She had a passion for exposing her family to art, literature, music, and theater. She enjoyed traveling with family, doing the NY Times crossword (in pen!), and organizing family game nights and museum and concert outings. Most of all, she loved being with her family and nurturing them with her love and zest for life.

Grace is predeceased by Orville, her beloved husband of 61 years and her son-in-law Lee McKinnon. She is survived by daughters Christine Garrett McKinnon; Nancy Jane Garrett (Jim Armstrong); and Martha Jane Garrett.

A Memorial Service will take place on Friday Feb. 2 at 11:30 AM at Moles Farewell Tributes (2464 Lakeway Dr. Bellingham), with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation (2901 Squalicum Parkway, Bellingham WA 98225) or The American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123).

  1. Dearest Chris, Nancy, and Martha,I am so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks as I watch the beautiful tribute of your mother in photos. Cecilia and I loved your mother so much. Although we saw your mother less than once a year, we developed such an attachment to her. That’s a testament to her elegant, beautiful, playful spirit. I will truly miss her. What a gift she was to you three and to all those who knew and loved her. Blessings to you three. Follow in your mother’s spirit and light. Love Kurt Archuleta

My heart goes out to the family of Grace Garrett. She and Orville were two of the first folks I met, on returning to Bellingham in the 1980’s. I thoroughly enjoyed them, they were so smart and engaged. And Grace was everything her name suggests – graceful and gracious, cultured and classy. I am lifting you in prayer during this time of sorrow and loss. You were blessed with a wonderful woman in your lives.

  3. Dear Christine and family…….Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your mother. I will always remember her from our childhood years on Walnut St. May God sustain you and may she be at peace.
