Obituary

Gilbert Allan Jones, age 99, passed away peacefully in Bellingham after a short illness. Gil loved bridge, travel, getting together with family, Latin fusion, big band jazz, and tennis, playing up until his 94th birthday. The son of a geologist for Standard Oil, he spent his youth living in places with interesting geology, including Wyoming, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona. As a teenager in Scottsdale, Arizona, he occasionally rode a horse to high school. The theme of his life was “I did it my way.” He, like his two siblings, was very intelligent, became an engineer, graduating from Cal-Tech with a Bachelor’s in Engineering, and a Master’s in Engineering from the University of Southern California. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific, and travelled around the world both during his naval service and afterwards, when he worked in Japan for a year and a half.

Gil is survived by Clara, his loving wife of 44 years; his brother Kenneth; daughters Carol, Linda, and Kelly; sons Peter and Wayne; grandchildren Gabriel, Jessica, Dylan, Nicole; great-grandsons Leo and Miles; and two nieces, four nephews, and numerous cousins. He maintained his sense of humor and wit up until the end of his life. He was a good father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be sorely missed. Gil was a Christian of quiet faith who let his actions speak more than his words. We are very grateful for all the prayers which were made on behalf of Gil and the family.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday February 17, 2018 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2117 Walnut St. Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
