Obituary

Gerben Jacob Oordt passed away December 1, 2015, at the age of 85. He was born on August 3, 1930 in Lynden, Washington to Andrew and Bernice (Houg) Oordt.
Gerb volunteered with the Army and served in the Korean War.
He met his future wife, Dorothy Karb, of Ferndale, Washington when “the Ferndale girls went to take stock of the “Lynden boys”. They were married August 28, 1953 and began life together in Lynden, where they had three of their four children. They later moved their family to Ferndale when they took over the family farm in 1965.
Gerb worked at Mt. Baker Plywood and Intalco, before settling on the dairy farm. He was also employed with the Whatcom County Humane Society in animal control, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union.
He loved farming and working, and had names for all his cows. In 1985 the Oordt family had the honor of being chosen the “Dairy Family of the Year” for both Whatcom County and Washington State.
Gerb was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Bernice, his wife, Dorothy, his brothers Robert, Martin, and Hilmer, and his sisters Esther and Magdalene. Gerb is survived by his sisters Jerrie (Jim) Raymond, Madge Kaemingk, and brother Bernie Oordt, his children Brenda (Jim) Weatherby, Rocky Oordt, Sandra (Bruce) Wright, and Becky (Dale) Gilbert, grandchildren Tiffany, Christa and Rachel Weatherby, Alex and Caleb Oordt, and Justin and Zachary Wright, along with numerous great-grandchildren. He will be missed dearly.
There will be a graveside service with military honors held at Enterprise Cemetery, 7041 Vista Dr., Ferndale, on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of Gerb’s life will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2488 Mt. View Rd., Ferndale, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.
One of Gerb’s last wishes was to keep Quiet Springs Farm in the family name. In lieu of flowers the children would like donations be made to the fund that is set up for this.

  1. Mary Oordt says:

Dear Brenda, Rocky, Sandi and Becky:On this evening between the military service and the service of remembrance for your Dad, I want to send my heartfelt condolences to each of you. You each had different life experiences with your Dad and I know there will be times when you remember him and your times together.

Some of my memories are of different phases of his life from the young man who loaned his brother, Mart, his car so he could take me out on a “proper” date to long hours at the plywood plant, to tossing milk cans on late evening, the work of the chicken farm and then on his farm, the many dinners at the Black Angus, heated conversations about politics and religion to recent times of sharing a meal or two at the Hill Top Cafe and remembering our earlier lives. What a varied person he was.

Look for the best memories and celebrate those.
    Love each of you,
    Aunt Mary
