Obituary

Garrett Friend Day passed away on February 19, 2025 in Bellingham Washington with all his family in attendance.  Gary was a caring and loving father, husband, and brother to all his family.  A lifelong resident of Whatcom County, Gary was born on January 20, 1947, in Bellingham, Washington.

Gary is survived by his wife Liz Day; two sons Stephen and Brian Day, and four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jensen, Ethan and Samantha.  His siblings, Tanna Davenport (sister) and Jon Day (brother), and many nephews and nieces also survive his passing.

Gary enjoyed a beautiful marriage to Liz for 56 years and together they spent many years building and renovating homes, raising children, and traveling the world.  Gary helped to inspire future generations of craftsmen by teaching the Industrial Arts program (Wood/Metal Shop) at Vista Middle School in Ferndale for over 30 years. From a young age, he found a love for the outdoors, earning the honored badge of Eagle Scout. In addition, he loved hunting, fishing, crabbing, coin collecting, and card games. Gary was a United States veteran, proudly serving a duty of 11 years in the Air National Guard.

Gary’s love of life, desire to build, caring nature, and loving presence will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Steve, Brian, and Liz: Very sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve Gary: spending time at Lummi, making derby cars at Vista for scouts, or swimming at Western. I admired his handiness, sense of humor and, (if I remember correctly) mild occasional grumpiness. I’m sure you all have much to remember. I wish you all the best.

    Liz,
I am remembering and enjoying the many visits with Gary when you would wither come to town or call on the pone. Gary was a hoot. You both shared a real passion for the Lummi property. I will miss his laugh and bright outlook on life Liz. Take care of yourself.
