Obituary

“My mom was one of the most incredible women I’ve ever known” ~ Brenda
Gail loved her family. She loved her little dog Missy, they did everything together. She loved her home of 30 years located on the beach on Lummi Bay. Jim was with her until November, 2009.
She loved rocks and was quite the agate hunter. She loved watching the wildlife, sunsets, and sunrises. She was a master gardener and loved working in the yard. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and washing the clothes as she watched TV.
She had many careers; at the Anaheim Police Dept., GP, Whatcom County, ending with Commissioner for MCFD #8, just to name a few.
She touched so many lives. She was always fighting for the people standing up for what was right. She will be so missed.
Gail is survived by her daughter, Brenda Lee; son, Brian (Rachel) Lee; step-daughters, Lynn (Wendy) Boyd-Kelley, Mary (Carl) Diltz-Kelley, Marcia (Ron) Hanson-Kelley; and step-son Bob (Maureen) Kelley. Also surviving her are her grandchildren; Jerico Harris, Lindsay Lee, Jacob Lee, Mara (Russel) Hanson-Anderson, Brian Hanson, Jeremy (Victoria) Kelley, Kate (Sebastian) Kelley-Anstis, Colin (Melissa) Diltz; one great-grandchild, Hailey Hanson; sisters, Linda (Barry) Chamberlain, Susie (Steve) McIvor, and Paula Rier; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

  1. Rachel Lee says:

From the first time I met Gail, she opened her heart and accepted me as part of the family.
She was such a strong woman, especially while in the work place and I admired her for her never ending pursuit to help and make sure all the people whom she worked with received the best care possible while on the job.

My fondest memories are that of when she and Jim so enjoyed visiting and watching after all the grandchildren, especially when they were very young. Whether it was walking on the beach, going to the park, baking or just snuggling on the couch, they loved each and every grandchild so very much.

I was blessed to call this special woman my mother in law.

I am so sorry the past several years were so very hard on you.

Rest In Peace Dear Gail. May you finally have found peace.
    Love to you!
    Rachel

  2. Gail was oldest of 5 Groves kids. She was our mentor and wore the badge of the oldest wisely; always encouraging us to “go for it” and showed by her example..I don’t remember negativity from her always there with solutions she was happy to help with…..Gardening was her passion and she shared her garden with all of us. Her home was her castle; the water and her animals and books- her sanctuary. Jim Kelley was the love of her life and her rock and they carved out a wonderful life for themselves and their families; everyone was welcome. She fought couragely to live with her lung disease until she couldn’t…we love you Gail..

  3. I had the privilege of calling Gail my friend. We worked together at Whatcom County and remained friends long after retirement. She was a ‘can do’ person who gave of herself completely to right any perceived wrong. She was fun, upbeat and appreciative! I’m so sorry for your loss. Heaven just gained another angel. God bless you during this sad time. Linda
