Obituary

Born in Mount Vernon, Washington

Finnian Farrar Burn; April 20, 1977 April 9, 2014. Finnian will be remembered in many different ways, as a loving empathetic friend, poet, musician and software engineer. Finn was a unique individual, delightfully curious, intensely interested – always with a heightened sensitivity to the world and the people around him.
Finn was conversant in art, literature, sciences; it was hard to find a topic that he had not already researched and formed thoughtful opinions on. Finn loved being on the debate team in high school and you only argued with him if you were prepared to question everything you knew.
When Finn was nine, he attended a physics workshop for gifted children at UC Berkeley. He studied chemistry at Reed College in Portland, OR, computer science and engineering at the Queensland University of Technology, in Brisbane, Australia, and later; finance and business economics at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Like his education, Finns work life spanned many interests including positions as a software programmer, software consultant, IT director, tutor and volunteer at an animal shelter.
Life was not easy for Finnian. Since high school he had to deal with Crohns disease, a leg injury sustained in hospital, and then struggled with an addiction that began with dependence on prescription medication. Brilliant Finn always soared, and sometimes flew too close to the flame.
Finnian touched many people during his short time with us; condolences have come in from all around the globe. His loving family; Colleen LaBotz and her partner Ray Maloney, father Mark Burn, step mother Laura Burn, brothers Brendan LaBotz and Ryan Burn and sister Hannah Burn, together with his large extended family and friends, will miss him deeply, always.

I’m stuck for words, except to say I’m thinking of you and sending love to you (wherever you may be) and everyone who knew and loved and lost you. Thanks for our intense and strange time together so many years ago. You were generous and true, and you have my respect and gratitude.

  5. Colleen, I don’t know if you will remember me.(Aon, Healthguard, Sterling) I remember the days when Fin was about 17-18 and you were so concerned for him. I know you loved him so much. My heart is sad that you have to endure this great, great sadness of the loss of your dear son. I pray that you will know through the words spoken in these messages that you and he are/were loved by many. My prayers are with you as I think of you through out the days.
