Obituary

Elwin died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on July 29, 1934 in Bellingham, WA to Stella (Stuurmans) Hillius and Elten H. Hillius.
Elwin married Esther Pearson in 1966 and they had 3 children. He also had 3 children from a previous marriage.

Elwin lived his entire life in Whatcom County, attending local schools, and graduating from Bellingham High School in 1952. He worked as a pipefitter at the Bellingham Shipyard, working on minesweepers. He spent 32 years driving fuel trucks for Diamond ‘B’.

Elwin spent his summers on commercial fishing boats, fishing Alaska waters and Puget Sound.
He loved the water, whether it was commercial fishing or sport fishing. He started his fishing career at age 16 out of Friday Harbor on the ‘Denny M’ ending on the ‘Joseph’ out of Bellingham in 1975.

Elwin and Esther loved to travel and took may trips to Maui, loving every moment they spent there. They also traveled with their children, visiting many places where there was either a beautiful beach or a mountain. Cannon Beach became a family favorite.

Elwin was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1974. He loved his door to door service, sharing his hope for the ‘Paradise Earth’ promised in the Bible. He also enjoyed gardening and watching sports.

Elwin leaves his wife Esther of 49 years; daughters Shannon Bunker (Tod), Daphne Rasmusson (David); son Scott Hillius (Sasha Nielsen); granddaughters Kelci and Mya Rasmusson and Mica Renee Hillius; sister Gertrude, all of Whatcom County.

  1. I will miss your visits to the office, as you always had a good story to tell about Scott (stories that of course he would never tell me!). I know that you raised an incredible son, and the values and virtues you have taught him have made him an extremely good man. It was a pleasure getting to know you Elwin. I am glad you got to see the Seahawks win the Superbowl!

  2. Pop, I miss you so much. You were such a special father – taught us to be loyal, honest, to work hard, to have pride in ourselves and to enjoy all that we have been given. To love the little things in life.
Always a good husband to our mother, a wonderful grandpa to our children, thoroughly loving your grandchildren and every minute you had with them. You taught me family is everything. Always supporting me, always there for me no matter what and came running to help.

I will always love you and will miss your smiling face every single day.

    ~ Daphne

It’s so hard to lose someone that you feel you didn’t have enough time with. I can’t say enough good things about you. My life has an empty spot that can never be filled. I will cherish all the happy moments we did spend together and never forget your quick humor and how you made everyone laugh. You will be missed tremendously.Love you Dad………..Rhonda

Dear Scott and Family: I am so sorry to hear of your dear Father passing away. May you find comfort in knowing that he is at peace.

  5. So many fond memories of being at your house, all the fishing trips to Baker Lake, (although I still think the bigger fish were caught at Lake Shannon) and having our families share in meals and laughter together. I can still remember Elwin’s quick wit and laugh. I’m thankful for those times and hope you can all find comfort in remembering special moments that you were able to spend together.
