Obituary

Elizabeth E “Bette” Roe passed away in Kirkland on March 31, 2016 at the age of 86 after a long illness.

Born in Lynden on April 6, 1929, to Rudy and Hattie (Rademacher) Horat, she graduated from Lynden High School in 1947. After graduation, she worked for her brother-in-law’s dealership in Lynden. She married Jim Roe on April 1st, 1948 and in 1954 they moved to Bellingham.

She worked a variety of jobs, all designed to have her home after school so she could take care of her children. She then started work as the cook at Assumption School for several` years while her children were in attendance there. In 1979 she decided to start her own successful business, Northwest Bookkeeping, and continued self-employment until around 1998. She remained in the family home until 2011. She was a member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ferndale and volunteered there as well as at St Joseph’s Hospital in the gift shop for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Rudy & Hattie Horat, her siblings Mary Noteboom, Hattie Steiner, Rudy Horat, Ben Horat and Carl Horat. She is survived by her five children, Vicki Brown of Vallejo, CA, Ed (Jill) Roe of Kenmore, Paul (Cheryl) Roe of Kenmore, Teresa Roe of Shoreline, and Tom (Diane) of Kirkland; grandchildren Monica (Don) Foote of Napa CA, Erin (Seth) Tator of Vallejo, CA, Jena Roe, Brandi (Bill) Gray, Adam Fry-Pierce, Joni Roe, Madeline Roe, Philip Roe, Thomas Roe and Mary Madaline Roe; great grandchildren Kiran Tator, Zoe Tator, Blair Gray and Brooklyn Gray.

Bette was active with her children’s schools, her church and her community. She helped run fundraisers for Assumption School, notably the Harvest Festival; she was involved in church choir, and in later years worked with Lifeline through St Joseph’s Hospital installing emergency call units in the homes of the elderly and shut-ins.

Bette was talented as a cook, noted for her spaghetti and homemade bread (this spaghetti, which she served for thousands, will be also be served at the reception), her sewing, especially her home made quilts, and her confectionery skills in making homemade candy. She had gardens for many years and canned fruits and vegetables for her family as well as Swiss pastries she made from recipes she got from her father’s sister.

A celebration of Bette’s life will be Friday, April 8 at 11:00 am at St Joseph Church in Ferndale, with a reception to follow, and a later burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.

  1. Dear Roe Family,I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. I went to school with Tom and attended Assumption. I remember the wonderful Harvest Festival Days well. She was a sweet person with a great smile and big heart. I hope all your wonderful memories help you through this time.

  2. Tom Roe says:

Our thanks to everyone for their kind words and support. Today would have been Mom’s 87th birthday, I’m sure she’s celebrating right now with Dad in a better place.

  3. Jerry Heller says:

To the Roe family. My deepest sympathy on your loss. I so remember your mother and her famous spaghetti and cinnamon rolls while attending Assumption School many years ago. All I can say is “YUM”. I do remember her making sure we didn’t take too much of the spaghetti and cinnamon roles at hot lunch:) She was a joy and a real blessing to those who were lucky to know her and her cooking talents. She is now at peace in God’s hands. May you find peace and joy in your hearts as you remember Betty “Mrs. Roe to us school children”. She will be missed.

  4. Fred Moody says:

I fondly remember Betty from her days at Assumption–I was one of the children she lovingly fed, and one of the many, many children passing through that school who adored her. A life well lived…

  5. Betty was an amazing woman, mother and grandmother. I first met Betty through Tom and then worked with her at the Harvest Festival. It was because of her efforts that the Festival was so successful every year..One day, I mentioned that I canned pickles and she invited me out to her farm to share her bumper crop of cucumbers and her pickling recipe…they were the best!
She loved her children and grandchildren, and was so proud of all of you, I am hoping that you find peace and joy in the days ahead.
