  1. I’d like to share a story of one way Professor Shipley has affected my life. Like many Western linguistics alumni, I had Professor Shipley for Introduction to Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. Unlike most alumni, I was lucky enough to find out just what a good person he was. Owing to confusion about the finals schedule on my part, I showed up to my Sociolinguistics final exam shortly after the allotted time had ended. Once I showed up and explained myself to Professor Shipley, he immediately located a room for me and allowed me to take the final, with no penalty whatsoever. This might not be the most important thing he’s ever done, but nonetheless it reflects what kind of person he was, and his choice here, as well as his classes, have helped me get to where I am today, in grad school for linguistics. I’m sorry you’ve lost such a wonderful person, and I hope my story can help you honor his memory.

  2. We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Dwan will be remembered as such a nice, kind and caring guy. Our love and prayers are with you and your family at this time.Lord Bless, Sharon and Orv Lofdahl
