In the meantime, some of you have been asking about charities to which you might donate in his memory. Please consider giving in his name to one or both of the following organizations, which between them cover many of the causes to which he was so deeply committed.

Lambda Legal, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is “a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.”

The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation “keeps music alive in our schools by providing vital support services to school districts, and new musical instruments to underfunded music programs nationwide, giving economically-disadvantaged youth access to the many benefits of music education, leading them to success in school, and inspiring creativity and expression through playing music.”
