Obituary

Douglas Grant Cox died peacefully on September 15th, 2012 surrounded by family at Whatcom Hospice. Born November 7th, 1939 in Great Bend, Kansas, Doug acquired his easygoing manner and dry humor from the Midwestern values of his boyhood homes in rural Kansas and Oklahoma and his young adulthood in Wichita, Kansas. In 1961 Doug moved to Carmel, California where he graduated from Monterey Peninsula College in 1964. In 1968, he earned his BS from San Francisco State University before beginning a four decade career in the food industry in operations management. He worked for several food companies including Dalgety Foods, Modern Maid Foods and Newlyweds Foods. Doug retired in 2003 and settled in Bellingham, WA where he became active at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and met a new core of friends. Doug also pursued his passion for the Seattle Mariners, attending both spring training and regular season games. The local Bellingham trails and parks were used regularly by Doug and his Beagle, cricket, for twice a day walks. He loved the marriage of the trees and water at the various parks and trails. Doug always had a wide circle of friends, all drawn to his inherent goodness, quick wit and eagerness to help others. Doug is survived by his son Eric Cox of Lincoln city, OR and daughter Amy (Stenhoff) of Bellingham, daughter in law Cori Cox, and son in law Eric Stenhoff , three grandchildren, and brother James Cox of Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers, Doug requested donations be made to WCCOA (Bellingham senior Activities Center) and The Grateful Dogs Off Leash Program.

  1. We sure do miss you Doug. Through all the years of walking our dogs, rain or shine, sleet or hail, & snow too, it was always a pleasure to stop and talk with you & Cricket. I will miss you two stopping by the house for pleasent conversation and a treat for your beloved Cricket. Godspeed friend….Dave, Wendy & our 4 little dogs, Jimmy Jackson, Danny & Peanut

  2. I first met Doug at Dalgety Foods in 1976 and kept in touch with him through the years. I admired him for his work ethic, his genuinely nice personality, and his quiet love of life. He was a good man.

  3. Cori Cox says:

So thankful he accepted Jesus before he passed away, knowing that we will see him again makes everything so much easier. He was a wonderful man, he is dearly missed already. The kids will think of him every time they watch the Mariners that is for sure. We love you Doug.

  4. Doug, Although I didn’t have the opportunity to meet you, I know you must have been amazing to raise a son like Eric – who was smart enough to marry a woman as amazing as Cori ;-) I’m so thrilled that you accepted Jesus as your savior so I can meet you when it’s my time, and shake your hand. I just know we will get along famously!

  5. He will always remain in mind and heart until we meet again.
