Obituary

Donald Reed Kurz, age 65, passed away on Aug. 2, 2021 in Seattle, WA.

Don was born Sept. 7, 1955 in Phoenix, AZ to Wilbur and Doris (Hilton) Kurz. He graduated from Nooksack High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Airforce, both active duty and reserves. On Dec. 2, 1978, he married the love of his life, Vickie Sare.

Don was a hands-on problem solver and inventor; he could fix absolutely anything. He studied carpentry under the Carpenter’s Apprentice Program and became a business owner and entrepreneur, even developing and patenting an indoor batting cage net deployment system. He developed land and built the family’s homes.

Don loved all sports and especially football. He coached girls’ fast pitch for ten years. He loved writing songs, playing the guitar, cooking for his family, and driving his sports car. His very favorite pastime was spending quality time with his family, especially his 3 grandchildren and his buddies.

Don was always there; he made time for everyone. His family and friends always came first and he provided endless direction and valuable advice. He was full of energy and loved to laugh. His family always joked that “you would hear Don before you saw him.” He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Doris Kurz; his siblings Eugene Kurz, Shirley Oleksuk, and Linda Klander. He is survived by his wife Vickie Kurz of Lynden, WA; daughter Stephanie Kurz of San Diego, CA; daughter Emily and son-in-law Steven VanMiddendorp, grandchildren Jacob, Paige, and Tessa of Everson. Sister Carole Larsen, and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tues. Sept. 7th at 2:00 P.M. at Homestead Farms Golf Club – 115 E. Homestead Blvd. Lynden, WA.

  1. Don and I were in the USAF together, we have kept in touch for more than 40 years. I will deeply miss Don . I have been on several road trips with Don most recently to Big Bend national park with Steve Giard another USAF buddie. Don was always a fun guy, His laugh was contagious. I am in shock he is gone so young. I was thinking of him the week he died and wanted to call him, we would always have a laugh on the phone. Damn Don I am going to miss you big time, I hope you packed your bags and hit the road. Don I love you !! Until we meet again !! My condolences to Vicki and Family.
