Obituary

Donald Pierre Mann, age 77, had a peaceful passing at home in Bellingham surrounded by family. He was born in Winter, WI to Robert Earl and Violet Scritsmier Mann. He attended school in Superior, WI. In Don’s senior year, with help from his older brother Hugh, he and his mother moved to Seattle, WA. Upon graduating from Roosevelt High School Don served in the army for six years: three of them stationed at Hohenfels Army Base. Later he was employed for 30 years by the City of San Jose in the Public Works Department, retiring as a Principal “Chief” Construction Inspector.
While living in Silicon Valley Don competed well in bowling & darts, and played a good hand of bridge. After retiring in 1999, and seeking utopia, Don and his family relocated to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Don and his wife enjoyed traveling to the East Coast and California to visit family, friends, and national sites. Don’s passion after retirement was his family. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Mary Kathleen, son Philip, daughter Jeannette (Jon) Butcher, granddaughters Madeleine and Avery Butcher, brother Hugh (David) Mann, sister Florence (Danny) Simenson , and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Rosary Vigil will be held Thursday Jan. 19, 7:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart on Friday Jan. 20, 10:00am, with interment immediately following at Bayview Cemetery. A reception at Sacred Heart will follow the interment.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul’s 1110 14th St, Bellingham, WA 98225. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the professional and compassionate services of Whatcom Hospice.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. My husband, Adam spoke of him often. Adam passed away in 2015, I know he would be sad to hear this if he was still here. Hugs and prayers to your family during this time. Memories and faith will continue to help you heal. Adam and Don worked at the City of SAN Jose for many years together.

  2. Kathleen, may God’s peace be with you in this time. So honored to help. Dale Pollard

  3. We became friends during our work breaks, at 3:00 pm along with Barbara Edwards. He became a real friend and a professional inspector. We often laughed at his humor.
I will always remember his smile, he never had a sad face, something we all seen an inner joy. When he stopped by to say goodbye when he retired from Public Works, I knew I would miss his smiling face walking down the hallways of City Hall.
I know he is with The Father in heaven. And I know we will see our friends and family again someday. So funny, his name popped in my mind just last week, I guess he was saying goodbye.
My prayers and condolences are with Don’s family, be at peace I know he would rather see you all smiling. God bless.
Elena Ponciano of San Jose, Ca
