Obituary

Donald Joe Schone was born August 10, 1923 in Redfield, South Dakota and died on May 20, 2013 in Edmonds, WA at the age of 89. He graduated from Redfield High School and was employed as a farm worker until he joined the Navy in 1943. Joe served as a Machinists Mate aboard the USS Pennsylvania, seeing combat duty in the South Pacific. After being discharged from the Navy in 1945, he retuned to South Dakota where he married Helen Larsen of Hitchcock, South Dakota on July 20th. The following November, they moved to Whatcom County where he initially worked in a sawmill. He later went to work for Skagit Steel and Iron Works in Sedro Woolley where he was employed for over 30 years. Joe worked as a machinist and was a member of the International Association of Machinists. After retirement, he worked for a while at the Bellingham Parkade and was also a Citizen Volunteer with the Bellingham Police Department for 18 years. Joe enjoyed gardening and working in his yard, traveling to the Oregon coast, polishing and painting rocks, kite flying and fishing. He was a lifetime member of BPOE 194. In 2007 he moved to Lynnwood to be closer to his sons.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife Helen of 55 years in 2000. He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Mary Lou) of Puyallup and Michael (BJ) of Lynnwood, 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 7, at 2:30 PM at Moles Greenacres Memorial Park 5700 Northwest Dr. Ferndale. You are invited to greet the family at a social hour at the Moles Greenacres after the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County or Sacred Harmonies c/o of Providence General Foundation.

    The Schones are a hugh part of the Blume familly. A chiledhood friend to Wally and Joe’s sister was marry to Dad’s older brother Don. All the Holiday’s picinics and many other happy occasions we spent together. The Schones are family and Joe will be missed by all of us.

  2. Mike, Bj and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Don was such a big part of Bob’s life. I know they had many discussion over just about everything. They stuck together through many changes. I will not be able to attend Friday, please know that I will be thinking of you.
