Obituary

Don was born Feb. 6, 1933 to Guthrie B. King and Marie M. King (Carson). He joined brothers Bob, Ted & Dick, and sister Vivian. Don grew up in Bellingham’s Southside and attended school in Fairhaven and Bellingham High School. Growing up in those days meant entertaining yourself with very little materially. Don talked about what a treat it was to take the bus downtown to go to the movies – bus, movie, and popcorn for 25 cents. He got the quarter from picking up bottles. His propensity for anything mechanical showed at an early age and he could be found tinkering in the yard with anything that had wheels.

Don joined the Air Force during the Korean War and was assigned as an instructor to train mechanics for B52 Bombers in Texas. After his military service, Don went to work for Shell Oil at their new refinery in Anacortes. During his working life he worked for various oil companies and construction companies in a variety of locations around the world including Alaska, Abu Dubai, St. Croix, and best of all, Skagit County. Don and Peggy met in 1968 and married two months later. They traveled together to most of Don’s job locations, and finally settled in Alger with Peggy’s horses, whomever the current Boxer dog was, and whatever cat had last adopted them. Forty-nine years & 8 months together – not bad huh?

Don loved boating, and most of the time would have a boat sitting in the driveway ready to go salmon fishing, crabbing, or best of all, clam digging. He is survived by wife Peggy, sister Vivian & brother Dick, nieces & nephews, current Boxer Baby Tucker & cat OhOh. Good night Donnie…

Donations in Don’s name may be made to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley (18911 Kelleher Rd. Burlington, WA 98233).

Peggy, I’m so sorry! I’m glad you called so I wasn’t so shocked when I read it in the paper. Just home today. We will talk real soon. Some of the best memories I have, is our wonderful get togethers going to dinner and drinking lots. Between Ernie and Don they taught me to drink “good Scotch”, and I learned well. Gone are those days!!!!! Love to you. Janet

  2. Hello,My sympathies go out to the family and friends in the loss of your loved one. May the words found at Revelation 21:4 bring you comfort during this difficult time. “And he wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” May you find peace in the days ahead. www.jw.org

  3. Don was a classmate of mine clear thru graduation from Bellingham High School Class of 1951! Along with Ron Axelson, Bill Hanstead, and Clarence Peters all from Happy Valley! In our Soph years at BHS, we were a gang that thought we had discovered the perfect way to Skip School and have a hall pass written and signed (forged) by our parents! Busted! So much for that plan!
Don and I double dated with local girls and worked on cars a lot!

    R.I.P. my buddy!
