Obituary
One of the Chosin Few. A Marine always and forever.
Donald James Call, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in Bellingham. He grew up in Bend, Oregon, and after graduating high school, joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. He attended the University of Oregon and graduated with honors. He then went on to earn his doctorate in sociology. Don joined the faculty at WWU (then called WWSC) and taught for over thirty years. Late in his 40s, he became an avid runner, competing in marathons and many benefit runs; he ran the Baker to Bellingham Relay at least five times.
Don is preceded in death by his son Michael (2005). He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sally (Sara), and his oldest son James.
Service details are pending.

Don and I were caught up in the road-racing scene of the 1970s, and we competed in the same age division. He was a hard man to beat! He was a quiet, modest man whom everybody liked. Until now I never knew that he had served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, and for that service I thank and respect him. Don also was a credit to WWU and a boon to his many students.
Don, I wish I had known you better. You were a good guy.

I have fond memories of Dr. Call, as he was my advisor for my Sociology major in Criminology at Western. My internship with the Lighthouse Mission was through him.
My condolences to the family. He was a very kind man, and I enjoyed his classes.
