Obituary

David Given-Seymour was born June 23, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up in Creston Iowa. After graduating from Simpson College in Iowa, David made Whatcom County his home. He then obtained a second bachelors degree from Huxley College. In 1988, David married Susan Given, the love of his life, and quickly became a friend, then a father, to daughter Jennie.

Davids life was rich and full. Both inquisitive and thoughtful, he read extensively and carefully considered what he learned. A briliant strategist, David organized a successful effort to save Cherry Point from a huge and ill-conceived marine project. He enjoyed working as a funding consultant to regional nonprofit organizations. He loved gardening, music, bird watching and other outdoor activities. He made beautiful gardens in our world but secretly aspired to make the world into a garden. David had an understated and sometimes wicked sense of humor that had the people who loved him laughing to the very end. He was at his best when he was with the people he loved.

David died in hospice on June 11 with his family and his best friend, Michael, at his side, released at last from his struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughter, Jennie, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jerrie Seymour, his father, Mel Seymour, and brother Ken Seymour. We will miss his presence in our world.

  1. I was privileged to work with David on that ill-proposed Cherry Point debacle — and we won against big odds!! Now a new generation has taken over the reins against the latest ill-conceived proposal there – the coal port – but David and others in that cause have been on my mind. It’s been years since we were in contact but I have fond memories of him. His low key manner, politeness, knowledge and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done without offending anyone spoke volumes. He walked the talk!!! My heartfelt condolences.

  2. I am truly sorry for your loss. As you know David has always a very special friend to me. I enjoyed every moment we shared. from the first time we met some where around Junior High. God Bless you all.

  3. Susan
Sorry for the loss of your dear husband. He was an inspiration to many and was always willing to lend a hand to our Falcon group. Thoughts and prayers continue in the days ahead.

Dear Susan and Jenny, our thoughts and prayers to you from the Julius family. David put up a good fight, to stay with you for one more year, after he was diagnosed. What a strong and very special man he was. Take care Susan. Love you.
