Obituary

David Given-Seymour was born June 23, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up in Creston Iowa. After graduating from Simpson College in Iowa, David made Whatcom County his home. He then obtained a second bachelors degree from Huxley College. In 1988, David married Susan Given, the love of his life, and quickly became a friend, then a father, to daughter Jennie.

Davids life was rich and full. Both inquisitive and thoughtful, he read extensively and carefully considered what he learned. A briliant strategist, David organized a successful effort to save Cherry Point from a huge and ill-conceived marine project. He enjoyed working as a funding consultant to regional nonprofit organizations. He loved gardening, music, bird watching and other outdoor activities. He made beautiful gardens in our world but secretly aspired to make the world into a garden. David had an understated and sometimes wicked sense of humor that had the people who loved him laughing to the very end. He was at his best when he was with the people he loved.

David died in hospice on June 11 with his family and his best friend, Michael, at his side, released at last from his struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughter, Jennie, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jerrie Seymour, his father, Mel Seymour, and brother Ken Seymour. We will miss his presence in our world.

My heartfelt condolences, I just found David’s obit while searching for him. I lived next door to the Seymours in Creston. David was 3 years older than myself and I remember always looking up to the Seymour boys. I recently ran across a letter David had written to my mother telling mom of Jerri’s passing – my mom passed in May 2013 – and it was such a heartfelt letter from him. I’m sorry for your loss.

  2. Dean Kahn says:

I knew David in my early, after-college years in Bellingham, orbiting in the worlds of the Opportunity Council and Citizen Voice newsletter.
David was funny, very smart and dedicated.

Although I rarely saw or talked to him in the years since, I’m saddened by his passing, and extend my regards to those who knew him much better than I.

Dear Susan,, David was a wonderful student and a good friend. He was a masterful community organizer and a fine role model for students at Huxely College. David and I shared many joyful hours in my office exchanging thoughts and feelings. I always think of him with warmth, appreciation and love. His heart was as big as the sky.
