Obituary

David Given-Seymour was born June 23, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up in Creston Iowa. After graduating from Simpson College in Iowa, David made Whatcom County his home. He then obtained a second bachelors degree from Huxley College. In 1988, David married Susan Given, the love of his life, and quickly became a friend, then a father, to daughter Jennie.

Davids life was rich and full. Both inquisitive and thoughtful, he read extensively and carefully considered what he learned. A briliant strategist, David organized a successful effort to save Cherry Point from a huge and ill-conceived marine project. He enjoyed working as a funding consultant to regional nonprofit organizations. He loved gardening, music, bird watching and other outdoor activities. He made beautiful gardens in our world but secretly aspired to make the world into a garden. David had an understated and sometimes wicked sense of humor that had the people who loved him laughing to the very end. He was at his best when he was with the people he loved.

David died in hospice on June 11 with his family and his best friend, Michael, at his side, released at last from his struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughter, Jennie, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jerrie Seymour, his father, Mel Seymour, and brother Ken Seymour. We will miss his presence in our world.

  1. I will remember David always as a strong, kind, and gentle leader for those of us who joined him in CSI as we worked to protect Cherry Point from threatened development by CBI. I do not think we could have prevailed without him. He touched and enriched the lives of many people who will miss his presence. I am so sorry.

To Susan and Jenny: I’m so glad I got to see David one last time 2 weeks ago. I’m sorry George didn’t call to play the guitar for him, he would have enjoyed hearing some slack key guitar. We are so sad for you and his friends. We are so grateful to have known David. George and Anara

Ten years ago David invited me to do bird census work about the Island Mariner whalewatch boat (with Terry’s blessing). Getting to know David while doing that work was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in Bellingham. HIs passion for birds – and his fantastic sarcastic wit – we had a lot of fun while doing good work besides. When David knew the orcas were nowhere near the San Juans we’d set off on a fabulous birdwatching trip, which, after having captained the whalewatch boat for almost 20 years, I got the sense he enjoyed even more than seeing the whales!

  4. Our hearts are with you Susan, Jenn, and David’s circle of friends. Sending love and light.

  5. Dearest Susan, I am so sorry for your loss. I only found out through the Moles Funeral Home page and thought to myself it can’t be! My prayers are with you & your daughter for strength for the next while.
