Obituary
David Clemens Hughes (“Dave”) was born on October 9, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Martin and Florence Anna Hughes (née Hallahan). He was raised in the greater Chicago area, graduated from Barrington High School in 1966, and attended Harper College before joining the United States Marine Corps. Dave served during the Vietnam War as an Aviation Photo-Electronic Tech for the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. After leaving the USMC, Dave raised a family and owned several businesses until he retired in 2013. On February 16, 2021, Dave passed away at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a ten month battle with Leukemia.
Dave was a loving father, devoted husband, caring brother and dear friend. His fun-loving nature, eternal optimism, brilliant mind and strong presence made it a privilege to be in his company. Dave was a hard-worker and a problem solver; nothing was too complicated for him to build, repair, install, or fix with little electrical tape and a few zip ties. He enjoyed following financial and business news, managing his own investments, shooting at local ranges, receiving phone calls from his children and grandchildren, eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and sipping on Jack & Coke. He also had the most amazing head of hair you have ever seen. Dave’s family wants you to know he is loved very much and will be dearly missed.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jacque L. Hughes, of Bellingham, Washington; his brother, Robert M. Hughes (Barbara) of Fox River Grove, Illinois; his six children, David M. Hughes of Bellingham, Washington, Christopher M. Hughes (Cecilia) of Hawaii, Mark E. Hughes (Claudette) of Hawaii, Margaret A. Henske (Scott) of Iberia, Missouri, Natalie M. Hughes of San Diego, California, and Andrew M. Hughes of Iberia, Missouri; his eight grandchildren, Noah, Solomon, Gabriel, Abraham, Scott, William, Jake and Ryan; one great-granddaughter, Luna; and three stepchildren, Lynette Eldridge Maberry, Kenneth Eldridge and Robert Eldridge.

Rest In Peace Grandpa! I will never forget how proud you were to be a very first great grandfather to my daughter Luna. Always loved hearing when you talked about visiting Hawaii. No matter where I go, you will always be in my heart. We love you Grandpa.

I read somewhere that when someone you love passes, their death begins the process of you learning to live without them, but your relationship with the person doesn’t end. Your relationship with your loved one still continues to evolve, grow and go through phases – just as it would if they were alive. This has brought me a lot of comfort over the past few weeks as I’ve been learning to live life without you, Dad. With every decision I make that I want your advice on, every funny story I tell that I know you would laugh at, every time I’m trying to fix something complicated that I could normally ask you questions about, every interaction I have with my brothers and sister, and any every other event or photo or other thing that I would normally connect with you on; I know you’re here still on my journey with me. For that, I am forever grateful. Love you. Miss you. I’ll see you again soon.
