Obituary

Darryl “Kamaya” Scarborough was born on July 20, 1940 at St. Luke’s
Hospital in Bellingham, WA and passed over on February 3rd, 2019, just
weeks from his 51st wedding anniversary with the love of his life
Emily Scarborough.

Darryl spent most of his life in Lummi Nation, but as a teenager, he
moved away from the family home on the Nooksack River to live with his
dad who was a well-known boxer in Kelso, WA. It was there that he met
and married his first wife.

Darryl came back to Lummi and became a logger. He also owned a fishing
boat named the Kamaya II and spent most of his life as a great
fisherman. When fishing wasn’t in season, Darryl was well-known in the
construction industry having been on various teams of construction
workers who built such monuments like: the Swinomish Longhouse,
Tulalip Resort, Silver Reef Casino, Northwood Casino and also helped
to build many homes between Bellingham and Lower Elwha.

Just prior to his death, Darryl told his doctors that he was a very
wealthy man. With a gleam in his eye, he said he had the love of so
many children (some that he and Emily adopted or just called them
“son”) and grandchildren (as well as great and great-great
grandchildren) that how can anyone beat that?

Words used to describe Darryl are: powerful, strong, loving, humorous,
dependable and caring.

Darryl is survived by his wife Emily, sons: Richard (Dodie) Williams,
Ernie (Valerie Cagey) Williams, Raymond Williams, Alex “Butch”
Martinez and Mark (Teressa) Martinez; daughters: Anita (Hutch) James,
Lisa (Calvin) Wynn, Rhonda (Herschel) McFarland, Beth Scarborough,
Darrylena (Darren Olsen) Scarborough and Kamaya Scarborough; adopted
children: Joe (Hala Gores) Finkbonner and Phillip (Ruth) Elgin, sister
Donna Cultee, brothers: Rodney and Michael Scarborough and
sister-in-law Gloria Washington, 38 grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren (with one on the way) and one great-great
grandchild.

Rest easy, on that big water, Grandpa Darryl. I know we never, had the opportunity, to meet face to face, but through my mom, and grandma, I know you were an amazing man, that I always knew as my grandpa. I love that we, shared a birthday and I know, you will be greatly missed. I want to thank you, for being such a wonderful father, to my mom Morina, without your influence and love, she wouldn’t be the great woman she is. I send my love and prayers of comfort, to the rest of the family.
