Obituary

Charlot was born in Ogden, UT in 1942 and raised in California. She attended Linfield College, completing a B.A. in English at the UW. She married Roger Mills in 1963, and they welcomed son Kevin in Alaska. Daughter Kelly was born in Seattle. Concurrently, Charlot cared for her brother Ken through a serious illness. Interested in psychology, she became a member of NAMI. She enrolled her children in the progressive Bellevue Little School and volunteered as teaching assistant. Diagnosed at 44 with a fatal form of Lupus, Charlot outlived all medical predictions. She was an active participant in the Lupus Society. She loved to travel, her favorites being Santa Fe, Costa Rica, England, and the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. Surrounding herself with theater, foreign films, and museums, she was also a supporter of public radio, with a playlist ranging from reggae to jazz. Favorite painters included Chagall and Van Gogh. Charlot herself was a gifted sketch artist. In 2000 she moved to Bellingham. She enjoyed time with grandchildren, gardening, studying philosophy and physics with Roger, and jigsaw. She was a philanthropist supporting conservation, animal welfare, and human rights. Eternally curious, passionate, and artistic, Charlot’s memory is cherished by her children Kevin and Kelly, grandchildren McKenna and Patrick and their mother Maryanne, brothers Bruce and Scott Pendergraft, and extended family. She was preceded in passing by husband Roger, brother Ken, and parents Wayne and Marvel (Fuller) Pendergraft. Charlot’s ashes were scattered with Roger’s in the North Cascades.

A joint celebration of life for Charlot and Roger will be held Sunday October 7, 2018 at 2PM at the Bellingham Yacht Club.

  1. Dear Mom ~ I am grateful we spent so much time together over the last year and half (as well as all the previous years!) ~ I will always treasure being with Dad and you, and with Dad’s memory and you. This quote by Rumi reminds me of time with both of you:~ The tender words we spoke to one another
are stored in the secret heart of heaven
One day like the rain they will fall and spread
And their mystery grow green all over the world ~

Love you lots and lots ~ Kelly

  2. Charlot & Roger were special members of the Alzheimer Society of Washington. They were always kind & caring towards others in our community. They were gentle spirits in our world.
With sadness & sympathy, Leslie Jackson

  3. Thomas Chou says:

Charlot and her husband Roger were my best friends at Linfield College. We stayed in touch for many years. But during the past fifteen years or so, I was too busy with my own life and failed to continue cherish the friendship. With a deep sense of loss and regrets.

  4. Dear Mom ~ Looking forward to celebrating your birthday in Spirit next month: going to the ocean to celebrate both you and Dad! So grateful for your gifts of sensitivity, passion, and artistry. You have been visiting me so much lately in your symbol of the blue butterfly. It is wonderful, Thank You! Rainbows also come up for you a lot, as you know :). I love you lots! Kelly
