Obituary

Stan went into the arms of Jesus peacefully at home on June 24, 2020 at 93 years of age, with his wife, Carrie, and beloved niece, Lani, at his side.

He was born on Easter Sunday April 17, 1927 to Adah Ruth Thomas and Raymon Stanley Dyer in Santa Ana, California.

Stan attended Fullerton High School, Fullerton Junior College, and UCLA with Bachelors in Hospital Administration and was Administrator and CEO of four hospitals in California to include Newhall, Marina del Rey, Tustin, and Santa Ana. At times he was also serving on as many as 35 boards and committees throughout his community and at one time was appointed by then Governor, Ronald Reagan, to a state hospital association.

At age 18, he was drafted into the US Army and did Boot Camp at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. He served in WWII and Korea in Counterintelligence and was also a drill sergeant and company commander. Gen. Omar Bradley gave him a field promotion and he was always proud to have served his country. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Major. There were always entertaining stories about his military and civilian lives.

While in Newhall, he became mayor and helped dedicate Six Flags Magic Mountain.

For 60 years Stan was a very dedicated Rotarian and served as President and Assistant District Governor in two of the clubs he attended. These clubs included Westchester and Santa Monica California, and Sequim and Bellingham Bay Washington. He also sponsored the first woman in Rotary. He exemplified the motto of Rotary, which is “Service above Self” and followed the 4-way test in his business and personal lives and had more than 20 Paul Harris Fellows.

He and Carrie L. Fox married on the Queen Mary on August 14, 1985 and had 34 years together living in California, New York, and finally settling in Washington.

He had two sisters, Geraldine Jung, MD, who was very special to him and he felt she was an angel on earth, now likely dancing with her in Heaven, and an older sister, Beverly Carpenter, who predeceased him in her 30’s.

Stan had four children and a beloved stepdaughter. Steven (Erika) was dedicated to Stan and called or visited frequently. When Steven served in Desert Storm as a helicopter pilot, Stan sent cards, letters, newspaper articles, and pictures to him for 143 days and was very proud of him. Stan’s grandchildren Tracy (William) Van Riper of Salina Kansas, and Joe and Madison were all very much loved by Stan and Tracy called frequently with long visits near the end of his life which was very special to both. Tracy has two daughters, Kyndrah and Sadie.

Stan was estranged from his other children who include Linda (John) in Salina Kansas, Tom (Charlotte) in Birmingham Alabama, and Sharlene in San Diego California.

He also had had a very loving relationship with his stepdaughter, Laura (Cliff), who visited and called frequently. It was obvious they loved each other. There was a great sadness and disappointment for Stan with not having relationships with three of his children.

He also had several nieces and nephews, with special niece Christine frequently calling and was very caring and loving.

He maintained a loving relationship with his brother in law Ralph (Geri) and we would visit or travel with him and enjoyed each other’s company.

He enjoyed reading, walking, crossword puzzles, people-watching, sightseeing, working in his yard, and spending time with friends and family. He was humorous, generous, kind, loving, very intelligent, selfless, and enjoyed giving to those in need.

He is survived by his wife Carrie, all four of his children and stepdaughter Laura, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Emily and Lamont Bos for their kindness, love, and help over the years in making our lives better, especially during Stan’s last several months when Emily would visit, call, or come and sit with Stan when Carrie needed a minute to rest, and Lamont helping do the yard work.

Hospice was so loving, caring, and treated our family with dignity and respect throughout the end of Stan’s life, and Visiting Angels, especially Paula, also helped care for Stan over the last year of his life.

Donations to Hospice or Bellingham Bay Rotary Club in Stan’s name, or Food Bank and Humane Society if desired.

His ashes will be scattered in Newport Beach at a later date and memorial service will be announced.
