Obituary

Charles Cameron Hilton, age 91, passed away in Bellingham on April 18, 2017. A Bellingham native, Charles was born on November 4, 1925 to Harry and Pearl Hilton. He attended Bellingham High, where he excelled at athletics. After graduating at 17, Chuck joined the US Navy, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war he played semi-pro baseball for the Bellingham Bells and the BC Royals, and began a lifelong career as an Installer & Teletype Technician with PNW Bell, the telephone company. In 1958 he married the love of his life, Maxine Compton. Together they raised 4 children.
Chuck was always a skilled athlete and enjoyed many sporting activities throughout his lifetime, later finding a new love in golf. As a deeply respectful man of high integrity, Chuck embodied sportsmanship. A value he passed on to his kids and grandkids. Chuck was powerful in his sincerity, his unconditional generosity, and love for his family. And, this man could make a mean apple pie! Chuck could fix anything, and passed this talent down to the next generations (whether they wanted to learn or not). Whether Chuck was BBQing in the backyard, playing with grandkids, golfing with his buddies, drinking coffee at Lee’s, or lending a hand to whomever needed it, he made sure that everyone was having a good time – a trait he learned from his father Harry. Among those who will miss his humor and infectious smile are his wife of 58 years, Maxine Hilton, children; Chuck Hilton Jr., Marlene Wright, Jeannine Tull, Tom Hilton, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 24, 11am at Bayview Cemetery. A Celebration of Chuck’s Life will follow at 12pm at Moles Farewell Tributes – Bellingham. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Whatcom Humane Society, Whatcom Hospice, and/ or The American Legion.

  1. What an incredibly well written and meaningful obit for a wonderful man. He was all of those things. I loved his kindness and sense of fun. He always reminded me that he played sports on the opposing team from my dad and that his team always won! He will be missed by all of those who loved him and knew him.
