Obituary
Carolyn Mae Hively, age 86, passed peacefully from this earth with family at her side into the arms of Jesus, her precious Lord and Savior, Thursday, June 12, 2025. Born in Loma Linda, CA on May 11, 1939, she grew up on “the ranch” in Escondido, CA with numerous cousins nearby. She also had fond memories living briefly in Quinault, WA with her family. She graduated from Escondido High School and went on to graduate from Biola University. She married a handsome Marine and fellow Biola student on June 16, 1962. They were married for over 60 years. After joining Cross World Mission, she taught second grade for a year, spent 6 months in Australia, and served over 45 years as pioneer missionaries in Papua (formerly Dutch New Guinea, West Irian, Irian Jaya) from 1964-2008. They were part of those used to bring a stone age “hidden mountain tribe” to a “modern day people of faith”. She loved the Scriptures. She was an ordinary lady who lived an extraordinary life. They retired in Whatcom County to be near and help their family. She was one of the kindest and most giving people you would ever meet. One of her greatest joys was her family yet she embraced all and made many feel like family. She was known for her hospitality. She was a teacher, translator, spoke 3 languages, prayer warrior, an avid reader and writer. She enjoyed music, plants, birds, and candles but most of all she loved and served people. She loved well and in turn was beloved by all.
Carolyn leaves behind: Jodee and Ed Roddy, (Carley and Kyle Bailey, Lauren and Luke Johanson), Jenny and Jamie Collins (Kyle, Kara and daughter Bella, Nate, Zayne, and Mia), Jim and Melanie Hively (Jeb, Moriah, Ethan, and Kari). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim Hively, her parents Henning and Pearl Peterson, stepdad Ray Welch, her sibling Dickey, age 8, numerous family and friends. What a great party they all are having in heaven!
