Obituary
Carol Joyce (Hardan) Smith; Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, was born July 18, 1940 to Jack and Erma Hardan in North Bellingham, WA. Joyce was many things to a lot of people – most importantly she was truly a friend to all!!!
Joyce graduated from Ferndale high School in 1958 where she was active in sewing and cooking with the local 4-H club.
In the fall of 1956, Joyce met Don at a teenage dance in Bellingham and they dated for 4 years. After graduating from High School in 1958, Joyce moved to Seattle where she earned her certification as an X-Ray Technician from Providence Medical Center.
On April 2, 1960, Joyce and Don were married in Ferndale, WA and moved to Bremerton where Don worked at the shipyard. In January 1961 they moved to Spokane, WA when Don joined the Air Force and was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base. They soon began their family with Jeffrey being born in June of 1962 and Rob following in July of 1964. In September of 1964 Joyce and Don moved back to Bremerton where she began her lifelong career as a radiology technician and eventually an office/building manager for Dr. Islam of whom she worked for over 40 years. Joyce and Don were together for 67 years, 63 of them being married.
Along with her mother, Erma, Joyce traveled throughout the country and overseas with the Washington State Home and Community Educators. They would attend conferences and seminars gaining ideas on how to serve and educate their communities. This involvement included running the 4-H cooking competition at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden where they also had a booth and would help in the judging of various events. They enjoyed their time together and had many precious memories.
Among her special interests, Joyce enjoyed cooking (she could have a big spread on the table in no time when it didn’t seem like there was anything to eat in the house), baking (her cookies were legendary), sewing (always hemming something for her daughter-in-law or making something for someone), reading (she always had a book or magazine she was looking at), gardening (her geraniums, hydrangeas and rhododendrons were the talk of the block), and traveling (she cherished her trips to Maui and Disneyland with her family).
Joyce passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, March 3, 2024, at the Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Erma Hardan (Hatley), her sister Ruth Cardin and son Jeff Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Don Smith, her son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Pam Smith, her 3 grandchildren, Jordan (Sarah) Smith, Trevor Smith, McKenzie Smith, her brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Judi Hardan, her Brother-in-law, Wayne Cardin and a few nieces and nephews.
