Obituary

Carl D. Kurin, formerly of Ishpeming, died Saturday, November 9, 2024, in Bellingham, WA. Carl received care at Highgate Senior Living Memory Care in Bellingham for two years prior to his death.

Carl was born on November 27, 1941 and graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1959. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic for eight years. His service included a tour of duty in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he worked as a commercial aircraft mechanic for Fontana Aviation, Inc. in Iron Mountain, MI. It was there that he met his wife Ann (Johnson) Kurin who preceded him in death in 2011. Carl and Ann moved to St. Louis where Carl received a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Parks College. Ann and Carl then moved to Kent, Washington where they raised two children and where Carl enjoyed a career as an aeronautical engineer at Boeing until he retired in 2000. His great joys were fishing, duck hunting, cheering for the Seahawks and Mariners and camping with his family in the Pacific Northwest. In his retirement he spent many wonderful years “snow birding” in the RV with Ann. He and his son Kevin spent countless hours on numerous golf courses over the years.

He is survived by his two children Carol A. Kurin, Ferndale and Kevin J. Kurin, Bellingham -his brother Randy and sister-in law Gail (Pizziola) Kurin, Ishpeming, MI-his sister Kristine (Kurin) Laaninen and brother-in-law Bill Laaninen, Spokane, WA.-his bothers-in law James Johnson, William Johnson and his wife Donna Johnson-three nieces and three nephews and their families and several cousins.

  1. Amy Johnson says:

Carol and Kevin – Long distance hugs to you from Wisconsin, and prayers that God give you strength and peace. Uncle Jim was the one who mentioned seeing the obituary in the Marquette paper this weekend, and we had a nice long phone call remembering family visits from longer ago days.

  2. Dear Carol and Kevin, So very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing, but know he is now joyfully reunited with your Mom Ann. You probably didn’t know that your Uncle Bill and I once visited your Mom and Dad when they lived in St. Louis. It was a fun time. Sadly, your Uncle Bill passed away last New Year’s Eve. It is heartbreaking, but I am comforted knowing he is now with many of his family and all are in the loving care of our dear Lord. Aunt Donna
