Obituary

Carl Allan Bertapelle was born on August 29, 1951 in Denver, Colorado to Val and Arthelda (Straght) Bertapelle. In 1983, he moved to Washington state and worked as a Whatcom County Building Inspector. Carl was gifted musically and played instruments of all types.

Survivors include too many children, far too many grandchildren, and a couple of great-grandchildren. Family was Carl’s pride and joy and his eyes would always light up when he talked about them.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please share your memories of Carl in the online guestbook for his family to read.

  1. My Dad was a wonderful, loving man with a hilarious sense of humor. His laugh after playing a joke on us or telling us a farfetched tale with a straight face (especially those that as a child were beyond believable) will never be forgotten. For years I never wanted the gum he offered to get us in the store when he would run in because what kid wants onion gum?He always wanted all of us kids to be close and have fun memories. Whether we were in the living room all playing different instruments making the noisiest racket, playing a game or camping at the lake in the little rowboat, he took pride in doing his best to have us all together having a good time. At Christmas he would get all of us a toy that would get us playing and laughing together. I will never forget the look on his face of complete joy and happiness watching all of us run around like crazy kids during our Nerf gun wars or some other game he got us. There are so many funny things he did that will always make me smile when I think of them
He was a highly intelligent man that knew his job like the back of his hand. He would tell me things about what he was working on and different aspects of his job and I was always amazed at how everything he did was so important to people’s safety. He took it very seriously and was always learning as much as he could to further his education.
One of the most important things to my Dad was how much he wanted all of us to have a really good life. To be happy. To be close to one another and to be there for each other. I know he loved us more than anything. He would always avoid telling me anything that would make me worry and always protected me the best he could.
I can’t describe how much I miss and love him but I know that he hears me, is watching over me and smiling in Heaven.
    I love you Dad.

    1. I am Carl’s long lost cousin from SD. Only saw him as a kid. Lost contact.

  2. My deepest sympathies to all family and friends. He will be sorely missed. I only connected with him via his role as a building inspector, but he was one of the most reasonable, realistic and honest people to deal with at the county. His institutional memory and good humor, and fairness will be irreplaceable.

  3. Carl always made inspections interesting and educational. My wife and kid looked forward to his site visits.
    We will miss him.

  4. Mr charisma everyones friend. You will be missed happy to know you !

  5. Our hearts are filled with sorrow at the loss of such a great man, friend, father, step father and grandfather to my daughter and our two sons and a pillar in the Whatcom County community. Carl lived for his family, his friends and his job. He was a kind, thoughtful man who will be greatly missed by our family. Carl has most definitely worked with most businesses in Whatcom County as Senior Building Inspector and will be missed by not only our family, but by our community as well. He will most definitely be a hard act to follow for those who follow in his footsteps, for without Carl a number of businesses would be unable to operate.
Carl had a unique sense of humor and if you got, you got it…he was always a delight to spend holidays with, always in attendance for Thanksgiving, Christmas and even attended both my son’s very first birthday bowling tournament.
Carl was there for my mother, Jane Agard and for me, like no one else, always lending an ear, jumper cables or just a smart remark that always made her smile, laugh, cry or even at times mad. That’s what great people, great friends do- they are always just there.
Goodbye is only for now, never forever. Goodbye for now Carl, we miss you more than you could ever know. Fly with the angels.
