Bellingham

Burnett H. Schemstad, age 94, passed away in Bellingham, WA on Thursday, May 1, 2014. Burnett was born to Jon H. and Bella (Olsen) Schemstad in Bellingham on November 30, 1919.

Burnett married Esther (Olson) in 1942 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church Parsonage in Bellingham. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during WWII, which took him to New Guinea and to the Philippines from 1943 to 1945. Prior to the war, he worked as a blacksmith. After the war, he spent the majority of his career working for the Street Department for the City of Bellingham until his retirement.

Burnett was a rocksmith, and enjoyed selling items that he crafted out of metal and wood. He was an outdoorsman, and was passionate about gardening. He was a life-long member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and was also a member of I.O.F.

Burnett is survived by his wife of 72 years, Esther (Olson) Schemstad of Bellingham, daughter Janet Harmoney of Bellingham, grandsons; Scott (Stacy) Schemstad of Ferndale, Steve (Tammy) Schemstad of Bellingham, Jon Schemstad of Bellingham and Ken (Chris) Harmoney of Ferndale, Jeff Harmoney of Everson, granddaughters; Anna Schemstad of Bellingham and Angie (Ricky) Folden of Everson, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Gary Schemstad (Concrete, WA) and sisters Charlene Davies (Seattle, WA), and Betty Lou Schemstad (Bellingham). Farewell Tribute Information

The family will receive guests at his visitation on Wednesday, May 7th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the chapel at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, WA.

There will be a memorial service at 12:00 PM, immediately following the visitation, beginning in the chapel at Greenacres.

The family invites you to a reception with a light lunch following the memorial service, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1720 Harris Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225

  1. I know Burnett as he and his lovely wife shopped in my grocery store over the years! He was always a delight to see and talk with. To his amazing wife and family- I’m so sorry for you loss…my thoughts are with you all

    My thoughts and prayers and with all of you. Burnett (Grampa Barney) was a special man and I know he adored all his grandchildren. He will be surely missed.

I hope you can find comfort in the Bible’s promise in Revelation 21:4 where it says ” And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” I am sorry for your loss.
