Obituary

Bernice was born in Tacoma, WA to Harry and Mary Brown.

She enjoyed gardening, painting, antiques, and traveling. A longtime Whatcom County resident, Bernice lived in Lynden with her husband, Donald, who was one of the town’s first veterinarians.

She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Frank Brown; first husband, Donald Ellwanger; and second husband, Merton Murk.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathy Starbuck and Virginia Jennings; granddaughters, Sybil Smith and Emily Stonecipher; great-grandson, Percy Stonecipher; longtime family friend and caregiver, Dianna Kirkham; and other extended family members.

To honor her love of flowers and springtime, the immediate family will be planning a private graveside service in the spring, followed by a celebration of life at her home of many years, Correll Park in Ferndale.

  1. To Bea’s family we share our heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Bea was a cherished member of the Wednesday Girls; a group of ladies that met regularly to enjoy fellowship, food and shared “the grapes” while solving the problems of the world at the time. We laughed together, cried together and supported each other during a personal crisis or a joyful event in our lives. Her spiritual being, her kind and understanding heart was evident in her daily life as she gave council to many young teens through difficult events in their lives as well as giving of herself and her sense of fairness to those in need.
Bea in her sweetness had a deep love for her family and a sincere devotion to her many friends.
    Thanks for the memories Bea!
The Wednesday Girls, Marlene and. Becky
