Obituary

Barbara passed away in Bellingham, at home, surround by family on October 15, 2017. She was born on November 24, 1932 to Clifford & Gladys Howe. A lifelong resident of Bellingham, Barbara graduated from Bellingham High school, class of 1950. A year after graduation, in March of 1951, she married Dale L. Strickler, and together they had three children. Barbara worked Ershig’s for 37 years, performing a variety of tasks.

Always a lady of grace, glamor and a bit of sass (not to mention her wit and sharp tongue!), Barbara was class act all the way down to the Virginia Slim! She had an unending sense of humor and could make anyone laugh, or at least smile. And, she loved to laugh! Barbara also had a heart for the underdog, or someone going through a difficult time. It was not unusual for her to take a bag of groceries to someone in need, and she spent many Saturday afternoons consoling friends and family members through their life’s difficulties. Barbara enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Gladys Howe, her sisters Betty Reed and Vivian Adams, and ex-husband Dale L. Strickler.

Barbara is survived by daughter & son-in-law Sallie Strickler- Deitz & Gary Deitz of Seattle, WA, son & daughter–in-law Mick & Nancy Strickler of Thousand Oaks, CA, son & daughter-in-law Scott & Patty Strickler of Bellingham, WA, granddaughter Samantha (Paul Jr.) Tradelius of Novato, CA, grandson Elliott (Kayla) Strickler of Thousand Oaks, CA, and by great-grandchildren Bardot Tradelius, Monroe Tradelius and Connor Strickler

Barbara was an amazing woman, mother, & grandmother and will be dearly missed by all whom loved her.

  2. Dear family of Barbara,Barbie was the highlight of my time working at Ershigs. She and I shared many laughs and I loved her keen sense of humor. During times that I struggled, her listening ear and empathy was a blessing. She often spoke to me about her children and grandchildren. Barbie was soooo proud of each one of you and loved you all so much.
My sincere condolences to you. Barbie will be deeply missed but forever remembered.,
    Hugs to all,
    Debbie Trenary

Aunt Mertie, I shall miss you so. From the early days when you took me to all those Roy Rogers movies, the summer weeks I would spend with you and Dale, the times we all lived together and you were a second Mother to me and helped me through some trying times, to the present when I could call and talk to you about anything. I always trusted your advice and I will miss that great, rolling, distinctive laugh and big smile.
My condolences to my cousins and families. Just know that she always spoke of her great kids and grandkids and their caring support.
