Obituary

Barbara was born in Providence, RI to Edgar and May Wood (Cole). She moved to CA in 1956 where she met and married Walter Happe on December 19, 1964. Barbara trained and worked as a medical secretary for five years. She enjoyed the medical field but realized the challenge wasn’t there. She graduated from the Long Beach City College RN program. Barbara worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in both Critical Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen for 20 years.
Barbara semi-retired in 1996 and moved with Walt to Bellingham WA. She was very active in the community with Visiting Nurses and Academy for Life Long Learning.
Barbara always loved gardening, so moving from the southern California climate to WA compelled her to learn more. She completed the Master Gardeners program through WSU. She never did anything half way; she always wanted to know more about whatever she was working on or with.
Barbara loved to travel. She and Walt toured Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Russia and Germany. What she loved most though was travelling by car. She and Walt drove all around the U.S. and Canada visiting friends and family, National Parks, the Alaska Highway and the Erie Canal Road.
Barbara is survived by her husband Walter P Happe, her sister Shirley Wood of Belmont NH, her brothers Paul from Kihei, HI and Robert from Forest Falls, CA
In lieu of flowers the family would welcome support for the Whatcom Literacy Council 2205 Elm Street Bellingham WA 98225.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at 11:00am with a Celebration of her Life at 1:00pm at Moles Farewell Tributes, 2465 Lakeway Drive, Bellingham. A reception will follow at the family home.

  1. Barbara was an amazing lady. A lady in every sense of the word. She was smart and funny and incredibly kind. We met her and Walt when we moved to Bellingham almost 10 years a go and our lives became all the more richer for it. Over the years as neighbors, growing into close friends. My memories include, all the holidays, numerous football games not forgetting the superbowl when Barb shocked us all with her Seahawks hair! We have baked cookies together, played board games together and sampled plenty wine and cheese! Barb we cant put into words how much we will miss you. You were like a Grandma to Josh and Zoe and family to Scott and I. We love you, our hearts now have a piece missing. We will look after Walt and still feed him wine and cheese and until we meet again Go mbuailfimid le chéile arís.
Love Andrea, Scott, Josh and Zoe (and Willow)

Barb and Walt, One of our most troubling decisions was to move away from our loved ones. I so wish we had more time with you. When ever I think of my orchard or garden, we all instantly think of you. You have been our angels in taking care of us all these years. You took us in as your own kids and loved our girls with all your heart. We have all the beautiful books that you pick out for the girls as a reminder of your kindness and love.
Your tomatoes, hearing of all your trips, iris bulbs, canning, plums, Christmas, cost co, books, pruning, asparagus, my car battery, Apple’s, blue berry pies, family dinners, brownies and ice cream……Just a few things that bring you to me. I love you both. We love you both. We pray for comfort to you Walt. We know in our hearts Barb was welcomed with open arms, and we will all be reunited again. This feeling of grief and loss is awful and sometimes unbearable, but I thank God for the time we had. The time we had that you enriched our lives when our own family member could not. We love you…..
